Tomorrow we’re celebrating Gracen’s second birthday with a backyard party. We’re so lucky that Grandma Charlotte was able to come down a couple days early and help us out, because between all of the weeding, pressure washing, pruning, and general cleanup (all things that have needed to be done for some time now), we’ve been busy! Grae’s of course been loving every moment of extra grandma time, hours outdoors, and “helping”… Not to mention the accidental discovery of the odd ‘surprise’ here and there (much like this awesome little bubble machine I found on clearance)… Oh, the joy of bubbles!

This morning Miss G found a little wooden Melissa & Doug box {that used to house her alphabet magnets}, brought it to me, and asked, “Play game?” Ummmm… Okay. I was certainly not going to turn away that sweet little face, so I had to think on my toes.

The two compartments of course lead to a sorting activity of some sort, and the first thing that popped into my head was colours.

I grabbed two pieces of coloured paper, cut them {very roughly} to fit inside the compartments, and asked Grae if she wanted to help me find little things in pinks and yellows.

Of course she was more than game, so we went around the house collecting things and deciding whether or not they were too big. This is what we came up with.

Grae needed no explanation. I simply said, “Do you want to play?” and off she went.

I did realize part way into our collecting that the activity wouldn’t last long, but we had already started and it’s not like it was a huge time investment, so we continued along our way. I wasnt timing, but the game probably lasted all of 60 seconds from start to finish. The good news is that Grae seemed to enjoy herself and was happy to take everything out, mix it up, and play again and again.
Next time, if we wanted to get more ‘bang for our buck’, we could easily use two more similar colours (aqua and blue, grey and black, or something similar) or try sorting based on something different all together like circles and squares, wood and plastic, or tall and short.
Here’s a little video of Grae hard at play multiple rounds in:

Today, while at IKEA, Gracen got to choose something special to buy with a little bit of birthday money she received in the mail. Her choice? Several items for her tickle trunk, including this lion hat and nose/mouth piece.
While wearing her new lion costume in the the checkout line…
Gracen: Grae Grae lion! ROAR! (giggles) Grae Grae trickin’ people.

Today Miss G and I continued on a little birthday tradition we started last year when she turned one – painting a handprint canvas together. This year was even more fun than last because Grae was really able to get into it and participate in the process.

After picking out our colour combination, we gave the canvas a few coats of pink paint, letting it dry in between each one.

Then, once it was completely dry, I brushed a thin coat of teal on Grae’s hand and together we carefully stamped in the middle of the canvas.

With the project finished almost as quickly as it was started, Grae wanted to continue painting, so on she went…

As she worked on her own project, I sketched out a number two on the canvas’ corner…

Then carefully outlined it and filled it in with a paint pen.

Tada! A very simple art project that forever saves those little handprints I always have such a hard time wiping away from our mirrors and windows.

And here it is next to last year’s. Pretty amazing / heartbreaking to see the difference 12 months makes…

This morning, Miss G asked for a marker. I gave her one, she went to her little table, and returned with this paper a moment later and proudly announced, “Happy face!”
Yes, indeed… That’s certainly a happy face. The first one she’s ever done all on her own.

On the car ride home, just after picking up Papa from work tonight…
Papa: How did you get so beautiful?
Gracen: Mama do it.
Best words all day, Grae. You certainly know the way to Mama’s heart. ☺
♥
As we’re doing our nap time routine today…
Gracen: Mama, no sleeping. Grae Grae do work.
Mama: You have work to do, Grae?
Gracen: Ya.
Mama: What kind of work do you have to do?
Gracen: Button glueing… Put stickers on paper…
Mama: Oh ya?
Gracen: Read da books… Play puzzles…
I couldn’t agree more (well except maybe on the not needing a nap bit). There’s definitely some very important work going on around here….

Today, Gracen and I got dolled up and headed over to the beautiful Mackie House for the wedding of my good friend Karli. The weather was the perfect blend of warm and breezy, the venue was gorgeously set overlooking the lake, the ceremony space was filled with beautiful little details, and the bride absolutely stunning. It really couldn’t have been a better afternoon.
Knowing that she’d appreciate the time to walk around and explore before having to settle in on a seat, Grae and I arrived plenty early. We picked a couple of aisle seats in the shade of a giant old tree, placed our belongings on them, and explored the grounds for a while. When it was time to begin, Grae climbed up onto her seat, enjoyed some of the special snacks I’d tucked into my purse for the occasion, and quietly smiled and waved to the guests sitting around us. Before we knew it, the bride and groom were announced husband and wife, the crowd let out a huge applause (Grae’s favourite part), and it was time to mingle on the grass. Gracen was reunited with her good buddy Sloan, whom we haven’t seen in a while, and the two were inseparable. They celebrated with countless hugs, kisses, and healthy dose of hand holding. It was cuteness OVERLOAD.
Here’s our afternoon in photos…
‘Found my seat.’
Off to explore.
Patiently waiting.
Loving the paper fans.
‘Mama, Grae Grae climb dis tree?’
Greeting the bride.
‘Oh Sloan, how I’ve missed you!’
Kisses.
Pretty girls.

For me, a big part of being a mama is creating special memories and traditions that your children will hold dear always and perhaps one day, pass onto their own children. With that being said, a birthday tradition we are starting this year is conducting video recorded birthday “interviews” of sorts. As the years pass by the questions will change and grow just as our little girl will… Here’s what she had to say on the day of her second birthday.
From her interview, I put together this so we’ll have something a little more concrete to add to her baby book:

I will readily admit that filling Miss G’s room with balloons late last night while she was sleeping in a room / pack and play she doesn’t sleep well in in the first place was maybe not my best idea… However, watching her march through them with glee this morning as I sang her Happy Birthday cancels out the fact that I’ll be operating on very little sleep and a whole lot of coffee today.
Happy second birthday to my darling Gracen Audrey Marie.

Tonight, on the eve of my little angel’s second birthday, I did my best to savour the seemingly insignificant moments that make up our everyday lives together. The little things… The squeal of excitement she lets out when jumping into the bath. The fact that she insists on running around the house naked and giggling as soon as she exits the tub. The way she received her new footie jammies as though she was the luckiest little girl in the world. The delight she got out of bursting into Grandma’s backyard in her pajamas when it’d normally be bedtime. The little gallop she’s mastered and saves for times of excitement. The tight hug I got in exchange for a little playtime as the sun was going down… All of the little things that make our happy, sweet hearted little lady her.

With a camera full of photos and the grass sufficiently brushed off her pajamas, we headed inside, and slowly made our way through her usual bedtime routine. Tonight, when she asked for just one more story, I read it to her more than happily. We snuggled a little longer than usual, sang our normal bedtime songs twice, and when she asked for “More kiss!” each time I had almost closed the door, I went back, again and again… Because tonight is the last night my little girl is one and these little moments pass by all too quickly.
Tomorrow the shiny new world of two opens up, and if it’s anything like this last year’s been, I’ll continue to wear my heart outside of my body, a proud mama watching her baby grow up into the most wonderful, kind-hearted little girl imaginable… And for that, I’m so very lucky.

Tomorrow Miss G and I head out on a little Mama and Bubba road trip. A good friend of mine is getting married this weekend in my hometown in the Okanagan, and since Brad is in his final few days of work at his current job before transitioning over to his new teaching position, Grae and I are on our own. While the two of us have done the 5 or 6 hour drive sans Papa before, I must admit that I am a little nervous about it this time around (despite the fact that Grae was basically born travelling and has successfully made the 36 hour journey to Kuwait and the 36 hour journey back to Canada – if she can make it through that, she can make it through pretty much anything, right?)
The thing is, at nearly two years old, Miss G is more active than ever. She loves to be on the go, naps in the car happen very rarely (they’re something we try our very best to avoid, so can’t blame her on that one), and without a second set of hands, there’s no one besides me to handout snacks, pass toys, or retrieve dropped items.
So, with all of this in mind, I decided to put together a little collection of simple, car-friendly activities to keep my busy body baby happy during our time on the road. Here’s what I’ve collected…
1. A Crayola Color Explosion mini notepad. I was actually on the hunt for the old-school colouring pads that came with just one white marker when I was little, but no luck on that front. While I don’t normally buy into all of the “gimmicky” products Crayola makes, this was the next best thing. One colourless {and therefore mess-free} marker with only one lid to potentially lose, but with the fun of all the colours in the rainbow? Yes, please. Sign me up.
2. A mini sparkly scratch notebook. Sparkly, fun, and virtually mess-free.
3. A magnetic pipe cleaner sensory bottle. Quiet fun + the easiest thing to put together ever = win!
4. A magnetic paperclip sensory bottle. Even better than the pipe cleaner one, and while it could be a little noisy when shaken, these plastic-coated paperclips don’t make that much noise.
5. Stickers and a notebook to stick them in. Pure magic in our house.
6. A homemade 3-in-1 travel board. Very easy to make and packs a big punch as it provides 3 activities all in one. All I did was spray an extra baking sheet I had on hand with a few coats of paint (this makes it prettier, but certainly isn’t necessary). Then I free handed three coats of chalkboard paint on this side, letting it dry well in between each coat. Afterwards, I conditioned it by rubbing a generous amount of chalk all over the board before erasing it. Voila! This side is not only a perfect lap-sized chalkboard, but it also doubles as a magnet board too.
For the other side, I cut out a piece of felt, glued it onto the baking sheet using craft glue, and cut out some felt dress up girls by modifying the patterns found here. Of course, the felt activity you create can be personalized to your child’s age and interests. Cutting out the letters of your child’s name so he or she can practice spelling it, creating felt pattern blocks, or making a matching game like the ice cream cone game I made previously are just a few ideas.
I’ve tucked all of the pieces for this travel board into separate containers so I can hand them out one at a time tomorrow and get the most use out of this board as possible.
7. Snacks. Lots and lots and lots of healthy snacks, each in small individual containers so they can be handed out one at a time. Dried fruit, nuts, dry cereal, fresh fruit and veggies, healthy bars, and freeze dried treats… All of Miss G’s favourites.
In addition to these things, we stocked up on new CDs from the library earlier this week, so we’ll have those to listen to too. Of course, I’m hoping for a nice long nap along the way, but if it doesn’t happen these goodies should take us through a 6 hour trip, right?
Wish us luck!

{this post contains affiliate links}As a mama, I’m always looking for unique ways to showcase Gracen’s artwork without our little house looking like a cluttered mess. One of the places we love to hang multiple pieces is on her bedroom door. So much so, that over time, it’s become her little art gallery of sorts. For the longest while we were just taping things up using masking or scotch tape rolls, then I jumped on the washi tape bandwagon, which took it up a notch, but neither were overly toddler-friendly. I wanted Grae to be able to hang her artwork and switch around the pieces without having to muck around tape or ask for assistance. So today, we put together a little gallery door that she can update and add to all on her own, with just a press of a clothespin. Here’s what we did…

Yesterday, while Grae splashed in the wading pool out back, I painted a handful of regular wooden clothespins. She’d come out, dripping wet, help me with some painting, and jump back into the pool, splashing my table in the process. With a couple of base coats dry, we used the eraser side of pencils, dipped them in white and black paint, and polka dotted our way along each pin. The result was very handmade looking clothespins with a charm all their own.

Today, we took some small 3M poster hanging strips and sliced them vertically using a utility knife and a ruler. (This can be done using scissors, but trust me – use a utility knife. It’s much easier.)

Next, we peeled off the protective paper backings and stuck the strips onto the backs of the clothespins, leaving just the tiniest touch hanging over the top edge (hoping it might make the job easier when we want to remove them one day).

As a last step, I removed the other side of the protective paper and adhered the pins onto the door. I put them on very gently at first, and once I knew my {random} layout would work, pressed them down quite hard to ensure a good stick.
The result was a gallery door where Grae can proudly display her favourite creations without needing much help to do so.
