Our Creative Space

Mama & Munchkin Creative Space & Art Showcase | Mama.Papa.Bubba.

Some of my very favourite moments with Miss G happen when we’re sitting side-by-side creating. Whether we’re working on a collaborative project or each doing our own thing, I feel like we do some of our best bonding while creating beside one another.  Sometimes we sit, hands busy, in silence, and other times we have in-depth conversations about serious / random / ridiculous things.

This in mind, I knew that I wanted to create a special mama and munchkin creative space in our new apartment in Kuwait.  A place for us to keep our supplies out – ready to be used.  A place where projects-in-progress could be left out day after day.  A place to showcase our work.  A space we’d both love and use.

The whole set up is very simple, but that’s sort of how I like things when it comes to home decor.  Over on Grae’s side, there’s always drawing paper, coloured card stock, watercolour paper, our sketchbooks, and mirrors for her to use, as well as her art smock and a variety of fun supplies.

While I know many people wouldn’t feel comfortable having all of these things out for their 3 year old to use as they please, I think it’s really important for kids to have easy access to materials that help them express their creativity.  Now I’m not saying that randomly leaving out a huge collection of art supplies for your little one to discover one day is the way to go…  Having all of these things out is something we’ve worked towards since Gracen was wee.  If I remember correctly, I set up her first little art station when she was around 16 months.  Back then it housed the basics – paper, crayons, a pencil, and some stamps and ink probably.

Now, it includes all of this…  Stamps and ink pads, white glue and glue sticks,  pencil crayons, markers, stamping markers, dot markers, glitter glue, crayons, watercolours, paintbrushes, squeeze paint, scissors, tape, play dough, and some washable paint.

Over on my side, I keep some of my favourite craft supplies… Alphabet stamps, high-quality stamp pads, Sharpies, paint pens, fold over elastic, washi tape, baker’s twine, fabric glue, Mod Podge, Aleene’s Ok-to-Wash GlueAleene’s Tacky Glue, paper punches, and an assortment of acrylic paint.  I also always have my rotary cutter, cutting mat, cutting ruler, and low temp glue gun here too.

As you can see, our ‘art showcase’ is simply different art pieces put up on the wall using washi tape.  It’s obviously not the most permanent set-up, but that’s sort of what I love about it.  It’s quick and easy to add new pieces and swap out others, so there’s really no excuse for not getting around to hanging that new art piece.

As for the furniture, you probably guessed – all of the pieces here {including the table-mounted shelves} are from Ikea as it’s the easiest, most affordable place for us to purchase items here in Kuwait {especially when we plan on only having them for a few years}.  The table tops were the longest, slimmest ones we could find, the chairs were affordable yet decently comfortable, and the shelves were picked for the fact that they did not have to be drilled into the {very difficult} cement walls.  Works for me!

And so there it is…  Our space dedicated solely to being creative and showcasing some of our projects. One of my favourite spaces in our new home.  A place where Miss G and I spend a lot of our time.
