Gracen loves “helping” wash dishes so much, I decided to turn it into a little afternoon activity today. While having a toddler standing on a chair beside you splashing in a sink of bubbles as you power through a load as fast as humanly possible isn’t always super convenient, this activity was easy and fun for everyone involved.
We got started by collecting some supplies we had around the house – a bin filled with warm soapy water, a dish drying rack, some plastic dishes, cups, and spoons, a nearly empty dish soap container topped up with water, some scrubber pads, steel wool, a dish brush, and a dish towel. In no time at all, we had an inviting little dishwashing station ready to go!
I asked Grae if she wanted to play, and she got going without hesitation. All dishes in the sink!
Without a doubt, squeezing the soap into the bin was her favourite part.
She scrubbed and washed each dish one at a time…
And when they met her expectations, they were added to the drying rack.
Though she was down to business for part of the activity, things got silly and wet too!
This station was a total hit and I can definitely see it becoming a regular in our play rotation. After all, what’s not to love about bubbles, water, splashing, scrubbing, and getting soaking wet on a warm day?
I must admit… I started this project in iPhoto long, long ago. So long ago, in fact, that Grae is wearing diapers in a couple of the photos {and we’ve been done with those for nearly 10 months now}. Mama fail. Life gets busy… What can you do? The good news is that I’m back on the project in full force (well, I’ve actually restarted altogether). The motivation? Both Gracen’s nearing second birthday and receiving a promo code for a free hardcover book from Shutterfly (love a free photo book, plus the timing couldn’t be any better).
Here’s a little sneak peek at G’s alphabet book in progress…
I’ve had several questions about how I add text to pictures for the photo books I’ve made previously and I’m happy to say, it’s very easy. Personally, I use Pixelmator, but Photoshop or any other photo editing program you’re comfortable with will work. All I do is open the photo in the program, add a text box, and type in my words (in this case I did two separate text boxes – one for the larger letter, and one for the smaller sentence). Once my photo and text looks the way I want it to, I export it to jpeg format. Then you can print the photos as is and pop them into an album, or import them into an online photo book creator.
Easy, personalized, and guaranteed to be a well-loved book for a long time!

For a long while now, Grae could count to 2 and would just continue saying, “One, two, one, two, one, two…” for sets of objects larger than a pair. Just before we left on vacation, she added 3 into her repertoire, and while in the Okanagan she added 4 and 5. It’s really incredible to ask your firstborn baby how many blueberries she has or how many markers there are and watch her count them up and proudly announce her answer.
How she grew up and learned all of these things so quickly is beyond me, but she can now count sets of things up to 7 on her own, and up to 9 if you help her with the number 8…
Gracen has loved books and ‘reading’ or being read to ever since she was an itty bitty thing and will literally bring you one book after the next all day long if you continue to read them. Just recently though, she’s started letting us know that she’d like to be the reader and we can be the audience. I can’t explain how happy it makes me to listen to her stories and share in her love of books. This was this morning’s story…
It’s been a little while, but I’m finally getting around to posting another instalment of Small Style…I just love sorting through photos for these posts and seeing all of Grae’s silly little smiles and quirky poses. No matter how goofy she looks, they just melt my mama heart.

A week ago, Gracen was enamoured with the idea of Bella (Grandma Charlotte’s dog), but whenever the dog came within a 4 foot radius, she’d shake in panic and desperately try to climb up the legs of the nearest adult in search of protection (in Grae’s defense, Bella is still just a puppy and has been easily excitable and quick to jump up until recently). Now, just 7 days later, after many long walks and several baggies of dog treats, it’s a completely different story. They’ve become best buds. Grae isn’t the least bit fearful and Bella has been calm, patient, and gentle despite the lingering hugs, overzealous pats, and ongoing tail tugs. Just look at these two…
Tonight we celebrated Gracen’s Poppop’s 60th birthday with a low-key backyard barbecue. The weather was gorgeous, the company was good, the food was delicious, and most importantly… the pool was warm! Oh, and how can I forget – the cake was only slightly gravel-y… If you follow me on instagram (jkossowan), you know what I’m talking about. ☺

Each day that we’ve been here in the Okanagan, Grandma Charlotte has taken Gracen along on one of her daily walks with Bella, her two year old water spaniel. Besides some quality Manmaw-Gracen time, the result has been Grae becoming much more comfortable around Bella, Bella becoming much more calm and trustworthy around Gracen, and this Mama {and Papa} having an hour of our day to do anything we like. (I must admit, living overseas for the first year of Grae’s life and now living 5 hours away from the nearest grandparent has not allowed us many of these opportunities, so at first I didn’t know what to do with myself… But I quickly realized that the time could be very well spent doing little crafty projects for Gracen’s second birthday party, which will be celebrating at the end of August. Yay for getting things done early!)
The other thing that’s come of these walks is the realization that there were several currant bushes bursting with berries down at the farm. So this morning, rather than sending Gracen and GC on their way, we all headed down the narrow dirt road, pails in hand, with the goal of clearing the bushes and using the currants to make something yummy.
Of course, we had to stop part ways to allow Gracen to give Bella a treat. During the past week, she’s become the official doler of puppy goodies and she takes the job very seriously.
We arrived at the bushes to finding them bursting with tiny, dark berries. While Papa whined pretty much the entire time (hi Babe! ☺) and even tried to sit in the grass and just watch us pick, Gracen loved picking berries. She carefully plucked them off of the branches, gave them a sideways glance, and then popped them into her yellow bucket.
Of course, she made some time to sample them as well.
Before we knew it, the bushes were empty and we were on our way home with a bucket full of currants and a plan to make my yummy baked berry oatmeal for breakfast the next day.
When I heard that there was a zebra farm right here in the teeny tiny town of Lumby (the town that is so small that it’s technically a village), I didn’t really believe it. Zebras, like the ones from Africa, right here in LUMBY? Sure enough, my good friend, Google, confirmed the story. Rawhide Ridge Ranch, located just 25 minutes outside of downtown Lumby (towards Mabel Lake), is not only home to four zebras. but it’s home to turkeys, cows, horses, sheep, chickens, coy, and bison too.
Curious to see what zebras living in Lumby looked like, and knowing Gracen’s love of animals, we picked a day and booked a ranch tour.
Today, we arrived to the ranch to meet James, one of the farm’s hosts, a big friendly rottie named Max, and this sweet little calf named Sophie.
Gracen wasted no time and wanted to go over and say hello to Sophie right away.
Our host, James, was wonderful. He was super friendly, truly excited to tell us all about the farm, and very mindful of the fact that we had a {soon-to-be} two year old with us. He even brought out a bottle of milk for Gracen to feed Sophie.
We spent the first part of our tour oohing over Sophie and this one week old foal, named Sky.
After a quick trip to the pond to admire the gorgeous water lilies and lily pads, it was off to the barn to meet a mystery animal named Tom.
Turned out that Tom was a giant, friendly turkey who roams freely around the ranch.
Such a funny looking guy – and with a personality to match.
We hung out in the barn for a while and visited with the other birds, and then it was time to be on our way.
Next stop – the fish! Strangely enough, this was one of Grae’s very favourite parts of tour (most likely because James gave her the job of feeding some of them).
It wasn’t easy, but when we finally convinced Grae to leave the fish, we headed down to the field to find Lucky, a very friendly ram who happily walks on a rope and visits with guests. We petted him, learned about what to do if he ever puts his head down and looks as though he might charge at you, and some of us (not me!) were even brave enough to try playing a butting game with him.
Then it was off to see the farm’s highlight… The zebras.
When we got up to their enclosure, they were all the way at the very back of it near the forest, so James went in, rounded them up, and got them to come towards us. The four of them, including 3 mares (2 of which are currently pregnant) and one stallion, came right up to the fence to let us admire them. They were beautiful and it was really cool to see zebras happily living in this sort of setting, rather than in a zoo. We learned all about zebra behaviours and even got to witness Apollo, the dominate stallion, keeping the herd close together by nipping the rump of one of his female counterparts.
After a visit to the bison herd, that was our tour. We stopped to see the fish again, visited the beautifully rustic guest house that can be rented out much like a bed and breakfast, said goodbye to Tom, and left with a dozen free-range eggs and Grandma Charlotte’s name on the list for an all-natural free-range Christmas turkey.
We had such a good time at Rawhide Ridge Ranch that I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to visit a real, working farm.

Goodness gracious. Our little lady is officially just one month from her SECOND birthday. I don’t know how that’s even possible. All I know is that time is flying faster than ever and no matter how hard I try, there’s no slowing it down.
Here’s what our little lady was up to from 22 to 23 months…
Gracen loves:
Being outside
Stickers (this is actually becoming a semi-problematic obsession)
Going on bike rides
Cooking with Mama
Visiting our mail lady (mostly because she gives her stickers)
Bella, Grandma Charlotte and Poppop’s dog
Being with her cousins and Baby Tate (she talks about all of them constantly)
Watching music videos on Papa’s iPad
Listening to She’ll be Coming ‘Round the Mountain in the car (repeatedly)
Eating goodies picked straight from the garden
Being in water (she’s a brave little thing)
Doing things on her own (“Grae Grae does it” is said multiple times a day)
Helping with household tasks (especially putting away groceries and laundry)
Being naked (this is new – perhaps heat driven?)
Books and reading (this is what you’ll find her doing during her independent play times more often than not)
Doing puzzles (and she’s good at them too!)
Beading
Looking at her own blog (she regularly says “See blog?” as soon as she wakes from her nap)
Popsicles
Going to the library to pick new books
Streaking after her bath (she does laps around the house)
Playing games (anything matching or colour based especially)
Music (listening to it, watching it, and making it)
Building and playing in forts
Trying new/sensory activities and games
Animals
She dislikes:
Anyone singing along to songs she’s listening to (you’ll be reminded once nicely with a “no sank you singing, Mama” and then it turns into a “No, no, nooooo singing, Mama”
When you do things for her (Miss Independent!)
She thinks it’s hilarious when:
Papa sings ‘the towel song’ (You’ll have to ask Brad to show you how it goes)
You throw things in the air and let them drop to the floor
After last month’s giant list of new words, I told myself I would no longer keep track, and thank goodness I did. It would have been impossible. From “breakable” to “pussy willow” to “octopus” to “library” and “rocking chair”, Gracen pretty much says everything now. She uses little sentences all day long and she’s constantly surprising us with the new words she busts out in conversation.
One thing she really loves doing is giving play-by-plays while we’re on bike rides. Riding on a bicycle with Grae sounds something like this: “Biking fun, Mama. Fun, fun, fun. See orange-y car! Haha – orangey car funny! Ohhh… Biiiiiig flag. Big red white flag. Clothes! Clean clothes hang-ing. See, Mama? See clothes hanging? People! People walking. Hiiiiiiiiii, people! Hiiiiiii! Ball! Soccer ball! Man plays ball. Biking fun. Grae Grae – pink seat. Mama – black seat. Aqua bike. Biking fuuuuuuuun!” And it goes on and on and on. Certainly keeps me on my toes.
I can’t explain how great it is to be able to communicate with Grae and have her be able to express herself as well as she can. We chat all day long day and I truly cherish the conversations we have {as crazy and repetitive as they sometimes are}.
She:
Now announces that she has to go to the bathroom, runs there, gets herself up onto the potty, and does her business (she even attempts to wipe if you let her)
Now counts up to 4 and loves having someone ask her how many objects she has (she counts them up and very proudly announces the number)
Names and points out all of her colours (including basic rainbow colours and more complicated ones like white, black, grey, brown, baby blue, silver, and aqua)
Sings Old MacDonald had a Farm
Can now open doors on her own
Is now much more comfortable around dogs and loves hugging and hanging on GC’s dog, Bella
Immediately gives you a hug and a kiss if she thinks you’re sad, then asks “Mama/Papa happy?”
Is a total fish and fearlessly bobs around in water that comes up past her chin – she even insists on us not catching her when she goes down the pool slide, which means she goes completely under water before we scoop her up
Can do proper, both-feet-off-the-ground jumps
Can answer basic questions like, “What is your name?”, “How old are you?”, “Who do you love?”, “What colour is our/Grandma’s/Uncle Brett’s car?”, “Where does Papa work?”, and “Who do you love?”
Now “reads” aloud simple books that focus on one or two colours/objects per page
Funny / Cute things she’s been up to lately:
She loves eating raw onions and herbs while Mama is cooking and begs for more
We now wake up to a little sing-songy “Mama, Mamaaaa! Morning! No more sleeping!”
Sings herself to sleep at night… Turn the monitor on and you’ll hear pieces of Twinkle Twinkle, Old MacDonald, Head and Shoulders Knees and Toes, and other favourites
Sometimes she giggles so hard that she snorts, which makes her giggle more
Well, that’s been our month… I can’t believe how in love I am with this little lady. She is truly such a smart, kind, and special little girl. I know I say this every month, but this stage is so much fun and our days together just seem to be getting better and better. Now to wrap my head around the fact that I’ll soon be a mama of a two year old little girl…. Ugh.
