Mama Bloggers & Munchkins: A Play Date

2 / 11 / 132 / 17 / 13

Since being selected as one of Vancouvermom.ca’s Top 30 Mom Bloggers, I’ve gotten to know some really incredible and inspiring local ladies.  Over the course of the last several months, we’ve turned to one another for advice and support time and again, and have become fast friends because of it all.  I’m beyond grateful to be part of such a wonderful bunch of mamas, and it goes without saying that I will miss them dearly while away in Kuwait.

Today Miss G and I were lucky enough to meet up with several of my lovely blogger friends – Tairalyn of Little Miss Mama, Amy of The Connection We Share, and Erin of Erin at Large  – as well as their adorable munchkins for a Granville Island play date.  The weather wasn’t completely on our side, but the company certainly made up for it.

Mini Restaurateur

2 / 11 / 132 / 17 / 13

IMG 5371It’s no secret that Gracen loves to help in the kitchen.  So for a long time, we’d intended to buy her a play kitchen for Christmas.  But when going back to Kuwait became a serious consideration, we decided to put the kitchen plans on hold, buy one after the move, and opt for handmade felt food instead as it can easily be packed overseas.

IMG 5367IMG 5377IMG 5372IMG 5366Unfortunately, we had a few snafus with our order and it only arrived a couple of weeks ago… Of course, for Miss G, who was spoiled at Christmas nonetheless and had no idea it was coming, opening the parcel today was the best surprise ever.

IMG 5370IMG 5384IMG 5376IMG 5382We laid out a blanket in the living room, grabbed a couple of stacks of plates, and she’s been whipping up meals ever since.

IMG 5373IMG 5383IMG 5374IMG 5379The funniest part is that every time we’re out and about and she spots a restaurant, she points to it and shouts, “Mama, a resdaraunt!  Grae Grae has one of dose at home in da living room.  Grae Grae has a resdaraunt station!!!”

IMG 5375IMG 5386IMG 5368It’s certainly no play kitchen, but our little sous chef doesn’t mind one bit.

Sugar Cookie Felt Board Set

2 / 10 / 133 / 22 / 14

Sugar Cookie Felt Board Set

Today, while enjoying some downtime together as a family, I put together a quick and easy sugar cookie felt board set for Miss G…  A sugar cookie cutting and decorating set.  All it really required was a few sheets of the cheap {recycled from plastic bottles} felt, a pair of sharp scissors, a plastic cookie cutter, and about 40 minutes of {interrupted} time.  Because Valentine’s Day is coming up, I went with a heart-shaped cutter, but any shape would be fun.

IMG 5335

To start off, I traced the cookie cutter onto the tan felt several times, placing them as I’d cut out cookies from rolled dough (making sure to leave a decent amount of space between each).  The only tricky thing is that in order to keep your ‘rolled dough’ piece intact, you have to very carefully cut the shapes out without cutting through the borders.

IMG 5336

Here’s what you should have when your shapes have all been cut out.

IMG 5337

Then I quickly rounded the edges to make the rolled dough piece look a little bit more realistic.

IMG 5350

Next, I cut out smaller hearts in different colours (and two sizes) to act as the frosting.

IMG 5353

The last {and easiest} job was creating ‘candy sprinkles’ by chopping up thin strips of felt.

IMG 5345

Miss was dying to get her hands on her new game, and began placing the cookies into the dough immediately.

IMG 5346

Then it was straight to cutting them out using her cookie cutter.

IMG 5354

Next up – the best part…  Decorating!

IMG 5355

Almost as much fun as the real thing… If only felt cookies tasted delicious. ☺

You can find our easy and inexpensive felt board tutorial here and some of our other felt board games here.

Playing Hookie

2 / 7 / 132 / 8 / 13

This morning as we were having our usual wake up cuddle in the ‘big bed’, Grae poked her head through the curtains, turned to me with big eyes, and exclaimed, “Mama, it’s a SUNNY day today!” Then she immediately asked to go to the beach.  I explained that it was Thursday morning, which is our usual Strong Start day, then let her know that she could make the decision.  She thought about it a moment and said, “Mama, we go to the beach instead of school.  We walk…. We play… We see birdies… We see the ocean… aaaaaand… we get hot drinks!”  So the beach it was.

IMG 5250IMG 5247IMG 5256IMG 5258IMG 5264IMG 5271IMG 5272Some days are just too beautiful to spend indoors, even if it is at school… (Shhh… Don’t tell.)

Get Down

2 / 6 / 132 / 6 / 13

Long ago, I told Brad I wouldn’t post this video online.  But after sifting through all of our Kuwait photos last night, I just couldn’t help myself (sorry babe!).  The cuteness is ridiculous and I’m hoping that makes up for me not keeping my word.  I mean just look at those chunky thighs and that little booty…  You simply can’t be upset after being witness to those.

Dear Gracen

2 / 6 / 132 / 8 / 13

My Darling Little Girl,

As your mama, my job is to help you live a happy, healthy, and fulfilled life.  Of course, this means making many decisions on your behalf, especially now while you’re so little.  Some of them, like making your sleep a family priority or ensuring your body is nourished with healthy, wholesome foods, are easy.  They’re inarguably what’s best for you and they’re worth every extra penny and every bit of extra effort.  Other decisions are not as simple…

For the last few months, your papa and I have been talking about one of those kind of decisions.  One of the ones that don’t come as easily.  We’ve weighed our options and made the lists.  We’ve discussed it with your grandparents and talked about it time and again…  And after all of it, we have some big news, Baby Girl…

We’re moving.

And not a little move…

We’re moving back to the Middle East.

Back to Kuwait.

Now I know you might be thinking, didn’t we leave there only a year and a half ago? Didn’t you guys choose to come home to Canada not that long ago?  And you’re right, sweet girl.  We did.  At the time, you were still so wee and had only had a chance to spend a few short weeks with your grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.  We knew we needed to get you home to get to know your family members and develop those relationships.  And you have.  We’ve spent the last year and a half camping with your cousins, spending holidays with your grandparents, and experiencing all of the wonderful things that come with being a Canadian…  From brightly coloured autumn leaves, to ice skating, to a backyard garden full of veggies and hills of fluffy white snow.  It’s been wonderful, Lovey.

But soon enough, we’ll say goodbye to this little life we’ve worked hard to build in this beautiful city and begin anew.  We’ll carefully pack all of our essentials, make the 36 hour trek we’ve come to know well, and set up our new life overseas in our second home.  It’s bound to be full of challenges, and yes, our families will be far away, but Sweetpea, it’s going to be wonderful.  There’ll be new friends, old friends, constant warm weather (sometimes so hot we won’t know what to do with ourselves), days spent at the Hilton, and travel adventures throughout the seasons.  I can’t wait for you to meet the kids we’ll live with,  for us to play in the courtyard each afternoon, to take you back to Dubai, and spend our first real European Christmas as a family (I promise we’ll make it further than the Frankfurt airport this time around).  We’ll walk through the sand to the bacala in the afternoons, we’ll close up our apartment when the dust storms roll around, and we’ll cool ourselves in kiddie pools filled with cold water when the heat becomes too much.  There’s bound to be days…  Days when your papa and I  become frustrated with living in a country so different than the one we grew up in, but it’ll all be alright.  The three of us will be together and as cliché as it sounds, that’s truly all we need.

You don’t know all of this just yet…  Seven months is still a long ways away and the concept of time is a hard one when you’re two years old.  We’ll talk all about it this summer when the packing and prepping begins, and it’ll quickly become clear that big adventures are headed our way.  But until then, Baby Girl, my promise to you is that your papa and I will do everything we can to ensure that you spend your days happy, healthy, and thriving, no matter where we are in this great big world.

Love you always and forever,

Mama

Valentine’s Slime Sensory Tray

2 / 5 / 131 / 24 / 14

Valentine's Slime Sensory Tray | Mama.Papa.Bubba.

After putting together our ‘Will you be my Valen-slime?’ favours this afternoon, Miss G and I got out a few things and put together a really simple Valentine-themed slime sensory tray.

IMG 5176

Slime is just one of those things that never gets old.  Miss G’s spent quite a lot of time playing with it in the past, but was every bit as thrilled to play with it again today.

IMG 5180

Her favourite part of today’s set up was definitely the heart-shaped cookie cutters.  She’d imprint a bunch of hearts, watch them slowly melt away, and then loudly exclaim, “MAMA!  THEY DISAPPEARED!!” before making more.

IMG 5186

My favourite part was that because this batch turned out just a tad firmer than our last, there was zero mess.  It didn’t stick to her hands, it didn’t goop up the bowls and kitchen utensils, and it didn’t cling to her clothes.  (A seemingly messy activity sans the mess = win!)

IMG 5184

We left this out for most of the afternoon and evening, and Miss G came back to it again and again before it finally had to be sealed up just before dinner.  But before that happened, she wanted a guarantee that her tray and container of slime would be left out and ready for her to enjoy first thing the next morning.

Valentine’s Day Slime Favours

2 / 5 / 132 / 11 / 19

Sparkly Valentine s Day Slime Favours

Okay, so not the most traditional of Valentine’s Day treats, but when you ask a two year old what she wants to give her friends for Valentine’s, you have to be open to the suggestions.  And those just happen to be heart wands and sparkly slime this time around.

IMG 5153

Luckily, fun-to-play-with slime is a cinch to make and requires ingredients we always have around the house.  Plus, we’re slime experts after whipping up 50+ slime treats this past Halloween.

IMG 5155

Detailed instructions can be found here, but basically all you have to do is mix the glue, glitter, food colouring, and some of the water together…

IMG 5157

And the other bit of water with the Borax separately.

IMG 5158

Then pour the two mixtures together, knead it together a bit…

IMG 5164

And watch oozy gooey slime form.  It’s honestly so easy that Miss G can do almost everything (save the measuring) on her own.

IMG 5165

For packaging, we like using these 125 ml mason jars because they’re the perfect size and can be reused for something else afterwards (plus they’re pretty cute!)

IMG 5167

Filling the jars with was Miss G’s favourite part of the process this time around, especially when she discovered that she could create all kinds of silly noises by forcing the slime down into the jars.

IMG 5169

Though she’d asked for red slime with red sparkles, this is what our finished product looks like {even after using a half a bottle of liquid food colouring}.  Luckily the pink and red combo is perfect for the occasion and Miss G was pleased with how it turned out.

IMG 5324

For the tops, we created simple paper circle inserts that include a little ‘Valen-slime’ saying and a sparkly red heart.  Here are a few close ups…

IMG 5318

‘Be mine, Valen-slime.’

IMG 5316

‘Be my Valen-slime.’

IMG 5315

‘Will you be my Valen-slime?’

Surely we’re the first ever people to give out slime on a holiday centred around love and friendship, but who wants to be run of the mill anyways?

Sparkly Slime

(This is essentially the exact same recipe we used last time, but in a bigger batch.  This recipe yields 24 – 26 mason jars of slime – perfect for a class of kids – or in our case, 12 mason jars and a big batch to use for sensory play.)

  • 3 cups of white glue (approximately 6 regular sized bottles)
  • 2 1/4 cups of hot water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon of fine glitter
  • food colouring (as much as desired)
  • 1 1/2 cups of hot water
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons of Borax
Combine the first set of ingredients until the mixture is smooth and free of glue globs.
In a separate measuring cup or bowl, combine the second set of ingredients until the Borax is dissolved into the water.
Slowly pour the Borax mixture into the glue mixture, stirring as you pour.  When the slime comes together in a large mass, knead it for a minutes until if is soft and stretchy.
Package in pretty little mason jars and gift to friends.
A few helpful tips:
  • While clear glue with work just fine for this recipe, environmentally-friendly versions will not.  Trust me.  We tried it.  TWICE.
  • If your finished slime seems too stiff and not soft/stretchy/runny enough, add some really hot water to it, knead it in vigorously, and let it sit a few minutes.  The texture will improve greatly.
  • Borax is a laundry booster and can be found near the bleach/stain remover/oxy clean in most big stores.
  • If you wonder about the safety of using Borax with children (as I did) this post is helpful.

Tonight Uncle Gary called and after not so successfully talking to Grae on the phone (he couldn’t hear a thing), he suggested a FaceTime chat.  It was so adorable to watch Miss G and her cousin Kins chat, sing songs, and show each other things through the magic of technology.  And though it will take some planning with the huge time difference, I’m so thankful we have this with our impending move.

‘Heart in a Hole’

2 / 5 / 132 / 5 / 13

Heart in a HoleThis morning Gracen and I made one of our go-to breakfasts… Eggs in a hole.  Except we always make ours with a fun shape instead of a plain old circle and then change the name just a tad. ☺  On this morning’s menu?  Hearts in a hole.

IMG 5136 I love this breakfast because it’s so easy, but it’s more fun than just plain eggs and toast.  Plus Grae gobbles it up every time and all you really need is eggs, bread, a little bit of oil, and a cookie cutter of some sort.

IMG 5138This is really so simple that it doesn’t warrant instruction.  Just place the cookie cutter in the middle of the bread…

IMG 5141And really push down.

EggsThen place the bread, along with the cut out in an oiled pan warmed over medium heat and carefully crack the egg into the hole.  Because we like our eggs cooked hard, we cover the pan right away.

CookedWhen the white appears cooked through, flip everything over and let it cook a couple more minutes.

IMG 5146That’s it – breakfast is served.  And today, just for fun, we added strawberry hearts too.  (This meal may just have to be repeated on Valentine’s Day.)

Mama’s Song

2 / 3 / 132 / 6 / 13

Grae first heard this song on the radio while we were in Alberta for the holidays and you should have seen her little face light up when she heard the word “Mama” in it.  She’s loved it ever since.  I don’t mind one bit as I quite like it myself, but dang – sometimes I have to force myself not to pay attention too closely…  Otherwise I’m a mess of tears in no time.
