Today’s Christmas countdown calendar activity was something Miss G has been looking forward to for a while now… Making and drinking homemade hot cocoa! Of course it meant coming up with a recipe that was both yummy and sugar free, but it wasn’t all that hard with the help of one of my very favourite natural sweeteners and a loose idea of how I used to make regular hot chocolate when I was younger.
Here’s the line up of ingredients my little sous chef and I used to make our hot cocoa… Cocoa, milk (we used dairy this time, but would have used coconut or almond if we had had some on hand), pure maple syrup, sea salt, and a vanilla pod. (No wheat grass required – it’s for green smoothies! ☺)
Making the cocoa was incredibly easy. First, Miss G measured out our ingredients and put them all into a small saucepan…
And then she gave the mixture a whisk.
Next, it was my turn. Stirring fairly constantly, I warmed the cocoa over medium heat.
Then we carefully poured our hot cocoa into festive mason jars decorated with washi tape and embroidery floss.
Gracen decided that she wanted to drink her hot cocoa by the tree with Christmas music on. Can you tell that she was a wee bit excited?
First ever sip of hot chocolate!
The verdict? She absolutely LOVED it. {Surprise, surprise. ☺}
Delicious Sugar Free Hot Cocoa
- 1 1/2 cups of milk of your choice
- 2 tablespoons of good quality cocoa
- 2 tablespoons of pure maple syrup
- 1 pinch of sea salt
- 1/2 of a vanilla pod (pure vanilla would work too)
Slice vanilla pod lengthwise and scrape out the seeds. Add the seeds, along with all of the other ingredients, to a small saucepan and whisk. Heat on medium while stirring almost constantly. Serve.
Enjoy!

I was just thinking about how I would love to make hot chocolate for my boys but didn’t want all the white sugar included. This perfect! Thanks so much!
This is so yummy! After finding out that I was allergic to dairy and sugar, hot cocoa wasn’t an option until I found this recipe. Thanks a bunch!
