Cousin Vanessa’s Wedding Day

6 / 23 / 126 / 25 / 12

Today, Brad’s cousin, Vanessa, got married right here on the family farm. As much as we spent our morning wishing and hoping that the rain would would not grace us with its presence, it did. All. day. long.  So when 2:30 rolled around, we made our way down the long gravel driveway with golf umbrellas, trying our best to get out of the way of incoming cars and minimize the amount of mud entering our shoes.  While I arrived at the wedding with puddle-filled shoes and mud in between my toes, Miss G arrived, clean, dry, and warm.  IMG 5460IMG 5465Just as we were asked to take our {hay bail} seats, something miraculous happened… The rain stopped. It couldn’t have been more perfect.  We enjoyed a beautiful short and sweet ceremony, while Grae gobbled down a container full of raspberries, a mandarin orange, and part of an apple (hungry girl!)IMG 5467IMG 5473IMG 5481IMG 5486After the ceremony was complete, we enjoyed a few minutes without rain.  Gracen explored the yard and checked out the playhouse, and we were able to snap photos of her with her Great Grandpa Leo and Manmaw.IMG 5494IMG 5496But sadly, the dryness was short-lived. The rain started coming down in full force once again, and the crowds rushed under the dinner tent to take cover.  Gracen did really well with being trapped in her seat and happily coloured, read, and enjoyed more snacks, but with a 3 hour break until dinner and very little space to move, we headed back to Manmaw’s house an hour in to work off some energy before dinner.IMG 5499We arrived back just as they were starting to call tables for dinner, and Grae kept busy with jam towers while we waited for our turn.IMG 5501IMG 5512It rained on and off during dinner and dessert (apple fritters – delish!), but whenever it let up, we’d take Gracen out for some exploring time.IMG 5516IMG 5522IMG 5523IMG 5525IMG 5527IMG 5529IMG 5532She was having a great time picking at the hay bails and smelling the flowers, until she saw another little guest wearing a polar bear hat, that is.  After that, it was straight to the photo booth to check out the props.  And they were awesome.  With each new hat, she’d ask me to take her photo so that she could see it on the camera display.  IMG 5539Unfortunately, we had to leave before the speeches and slideshow began (two of my favourite parts), but bedtime was calling.  Congrats, Vanessa and Cody!

Father’s Day

6 / 17 / 126 / 17 / 12

IMG 5016Sadly, Bradley has to work today…  But since we’re headed home to the Okanagan at the end of the week, we’ve set aside a day to celebrate our own little Father’s Day while we’re there.  Grae and I did manage to sneak out of the house this morning  (in pajamas and gumboots no less) at 6:30 a.m. to retrieve Papa’s favourite hot drink and breakfast treat from our local cafe/bakery.  We stayed a while, allowing Brad to sleep in, and when he awoke, he was very confused to find us at the table with our goodies all laid out.  Yay for little surprises.

Happy Father’s Day, to the best Papa Miss G could ask for.

We love you!

Mother’s Day, Just Me and My Girl

5 / 13 / 125 / 14 / 12

With Bradley at work again this Mother’s Day, my little lady and I got to have a special day, just the two of us.  It started out with a low-key morning of puzzles, stories, and tickles at home while sipping tea and slowly getting ready for our day.

When we were good and ready, we ventured out to do something we rarely ever do – eat out, just the two of us.  We went to Rocky Mountain Flatbread Company, a little restaurant on Main Street that is carbon neutral and offers an organic menu.  Despite the fact that it was incredibly busy and they could have used another server, we loved it.  The menu was filled with local, organic foods, their juices were fresh-squeezed, they gave Gracen crayons and a colouring page (which she was thrilled about), and there was a kids’ corner, complete with two wooden play kitchens, several tiny aprons, and an assortment of pots, pans, and felt food.  We ordered an organic fresh-squeezed orange juice (Grae even got a few sips and loved it this time around) and a Bradner Farms flatbread pizza, topped with local organic free-range chicken, nut-free pesto, roasted red bell peppers, and red onions.  It was a delish.  And to top it off – all moms got a complimentary fudge brownie topped with fresh whipped cream, raspberry coulis, and mint leaves…  Who could ask for more?

IMG 2720IMG 2722IMG 2724IMG 2728After lunch, we headed home for Gracen’s nap.  She slumbered peacefully while I prepped and packed for day two at the beach.  When she awoke a couple hours later, we climbed into the car and made our way to Spanish Banks for another beach adventure.  The afternoon passed quickly as we frolicked in the sand, splashed in the water, and collected all sorts of drift wood, and before we knew it, it was time to head home for dinner, bath time, and bedtime. IMG 2742IMG 2746IMG 2747IMG 2750IMG 2754IMG 2759IMG 2768IMG 2775IMG 2777IMG 2782

Although I’ve already had the perfect day with my wee one, tomorrow we get to do it all over again, as Brad is off and we’ve officially marked the day as our family Mother’s Day.  Bring on more beach time any day!

Happy 30th Birthday, Papa!

4 / 30 / 125 / 1 / 12

IMG 1556Today Bradley turned 30 (I love the couple of months a year that we’re the same age). We’re pretty low-key about adult birthday celebrations around here, but to celebrate, Miss G got to stay up late to have a family dinner and open a couple of little presents once her Papa got home from work.

IMG 1555This may have happened too… Her first ever taste of a chip.  *Gasp!*

Out for Papa’s Birthday Dinner

4 / 28 / 125 / 1 / 12

Tonight we headed out with Grandma Charlotte and Uncle Brett for an early birthday dinner for Bradley (he’s celebrating a big one in just a couple of days).  He decided upon a restaurant not too far from our house, called Burgoo.  We’d tried to eat there a little while back, but with a half hour wait and an antsy, hungry munchkin in tow, it just wast our night.  So this time we planned ahead…  Although they don’t take reservations on weekends, we arrived early, put our name on the list, and took a little stroll down Main Street.  And let me tell you – it was worth waiting for!  In fact, it was so good, that if you live in Vancouver, live near Vancouver, or ever visit Vancouver, you need to visit this joint.  With a cozy, rustic atmosphere, friendly servers, and an amazing menu filled with delicious comfort foods, you’ll be planning your next dinner out as you’re walking out the door.  Here are a few {poor quality} photos from our dinner out…

Earth Day Parade and Festival

4 / 22 / 124 / 22 / 12

This morning Grae and I ventured out for some more Earth Day fun, but this time in Grandview Park, just off of Commercial Drive.  Our day was filled with playground fun, parade watching, live music, speeches, sunshine, and fresh air.IMG 1091IMG 1093IMG 1094IMG 1097IMG 1100IMG 1102IMG 1109

Earth Day Festival in Everett Crowley Park

4 / 21 / 124 / 21 / 12

This morning Miss G and I ventured just a little ways down Marine Drive to a spot we’ve never been before…  Everett Crowley Park.  Once a landfill, the park is now a huge green space filled with trees, trails, and wildlife – the perfect spot for an annual Earth Day festival.

IMG 1022We arrived fairly early on, meaning that Gracen had her pick of equipment to test out and play with.

IMG 1025We really didn’t know how to properly use this little contraption, but all that mattered to Grae was that it was purple, sparkly, and perfect for swinging around.

IMG 1038After enjoying the toys, we joined the mass and lined up to create some outdoor art.  First job – collecting a stash of pretty rocks, glass stones, and shells.

IMG 1031Gracen would have been perfectly happy if playing with her pretty rocks was the activity in itself.

IMG 1043But there was more…  We were waiting on some cement mix.

IMG 1044When it arrived, she carefully transferred  her gems into the mix, giving each a gentle poke in order to set them in.

IMG 1054With her project finished and in the drying area, we headed off to the face painting station.  Earlier on, Grae had seen a little girl with a sparkly butterfly mask painted on her face, and she was certain she wanted one too.  The line was painfully slow moving, but we used our time in it as a lunch break and made some friends along the way.

IMG 1057Before we knew it, it was Gracen’s turn.

IMG 1059She sat bravely and patiently, inspecting the artist as she painted.

IMG 1071When it came time to painting the black outline, Grae decided she was done and wanted nothing more to do with the whole process.  Luckily, the painter had a trick up her sleeves – sparkles!

IMG 1075So with the promise of sparkles being added at the end, Miss G sat a minute longer.

IMG 1077And she was glad she did.  You should have seen the proud little look on her face when she saw herself in the mirror!

IMG 1081Face painting complete, my little butterfly and I headed back to collect her {almost} dry garden rock.

IMG 1088Pleased as punch, she insisted on walking herself out of the park and carrying her cement block the entire way.  I’d say it was a good day.
