Simple Play: Stacking O’s on Skewers

8 / 19 / 121 / 5 / 14

Stacking O's on Skewers | Mama.Papa.Bubba.When I stumbled across this blog the other day and saw this activity,  I knew I wanted to try it with Miss G.  Already having all of the required materials on hand, we gave it a go this afternoon.

While the original idea partners o-shaped cereal with play dough and uncooked spaghetti, I replaced the play dough with half of an apple and the spaghetti with bamboo skewers (you’ll see why in just a minute).

IMG 8585

To get started, we put our apple, cut side down, on a large plate and poked the bamboo skewers into it at different angles.  Gracen helped me with this part and it was actually very doable for her.  This was part of the reason I used skewers instead of spaghetti.  Being that spaghetti is so thin and fragile, I knew it wouldn’t last through set up, let alone play, with my enthusiastic little lady.

With our “porcupine” ready to go, I gave Miss G a small bowl of o-shaped cereal, and let the threading and stacking begin.

IMG 8591

Gracen really got into this activity and was truly having a blast stacking O’s on skewers.

IMG 8593

This best part is that not only is it great fine motor practice, but this activity is also a great counting and concentration activity too.

IMG 8594

Of course, little ones don’t realize all that.  They just think they’re playing a game and having fun.

IMG 8596

Grae was actually so into the activity that she wasn’t really interested in eating her o’s, which I thought for sure she would be.

IMG 8599

The perk to using an apple (or any other edible anchor) is that if/when the eating stage happens, you don’t have to worry about your little one eating o’s encrusted with play dough.

Part way through, Grae realized that the o’s were sliding down the skewers and started saying, “Wheeee!” each time she’d send one down their bamboo slide.  Too funny.

Here’s a video of Gracen hard at play…

The Alphabet Song

8 / 17 / 128 / 17 / 12

Brad and I are constantly blown away by how quickly Grae learns things. She just soaks up information and makes connections like crazy.  Just a couple of days ago, she started showing interest in singing the alphabet song. At first she’d sing random strings of letters – “A B P C B D X” to the tune of the song, and now, depending on the time, she can pretty much sing it in its entirety.

Today, while at Grey’s Park surrounded by swings, climbing apparatuses, kids, and a wading pool, she wanted nothing more than to lay on our blanket and sing her ABCs again and again. Here’s a little video I managed to catch…

Gracen Counts

7 / 31 / 127 / 31 / 12

For a long while now, Grae could count to 2 and would just continue saying, “One, two, one, two, one, two…” for sets of objects larger than a pair.  Just before we left on vacation, she added 3 into her repertoire, and while in the Okanagan she added 4 and 5.  It’s really incredible to ask your firstborn baby how many blueberries she has or how many markers there are and watch her count them up and proudly announce her answer.

How she grew up and learned all of these things so quickly is beyond me, but she can now count sets of things up to 7 on her own, and up to 9 if you help her with the number 8…

Gracen Reads

7 / 31 / 127 / 31 / 12

Gracen has loved books and ‘reading’ or being read to ever since she was an itty bitty thing and will literally bring you one book after the next all day long if you continue to read them. Just recently though, she’s started letting us know that she’d like to be the reader and we can be the audience.  I can’t explain how happy it makes me to listen to her stories and share in her love of books. This was this morning’s story…

Mini Karminite

7 / 20 / 127 / 20 / 12

Miss G has been a Karmin fan for a long while now and I don’t blame her – they’re pretty awesome. Though her original favourite was Brokenhearted, these two songs have been on repeat so much during the last month that I’ve had to start putting limits on how often we can listen to them.  Inevitably, after the ration is up, I hear “Mor Boom Boom Baby, pleasch, Mama?” or “Mor Money Money Money, pleasch, Mama?”  in the sweetest little voice possible. Tough to resist, I tell ya.

Book Lover

6 / 3 / 126 / 3 / 12

Gracen adores books.  In fact, although I’m sure they’re out there, in all the years I’ve spent with little ones, I don’t think I’ve ever met another one year old who genuinely loves books and reading as much as she does. We start our days reading, end our days reading, and sprinkle stories throughout our mornings and afternoons. It’s not something we only do together either… When the house grows a little too quiet, 9 times out of 10, she can be found in a quiet corner snuggled up with a book.  And if I’m being completely truthful, I’d mention the fact that we have a basket specifically for itty bitty ‘bedtime books’ that Gracen very seriously sorts through each night before picking one to sleep with (I know, I know… Not a good comfort object, but you’d totally let go of all judgement if you heard her little voice reading to her bear each night before drifting off to sleep… It melts my mama heart into a pile of mush.)  Here are a few little moments from our bookworm’s day…  If there’s anything she likes more than actually reading books, it’s being asked questions about what she sees in books.

One… Two…

5 / 28 / 125 / 28 / 12

A while back Gracen learned how to count {to two!} and she’s been counting things ever since.  This morning I took a little video of her counting the stairs to send to her grandparents, and when we arrived home this evening from picking up Papa, she wanted me to take another.  She waited until I got my phone out, then began climbing when she knew I was good and ready.  Obviously she lost track of what she was demonstrating, and when Papa asked if she was going to keep counting, it was back down to the bottom again!  My favourite part is her full-on army crawl up the stairs by the end.  I have no idea what that was all about, but it was hilarious.

Body Parts by Grae

5 / 23 / 125 / 26 / 12

I love this video for so many reasons…  Between the cracker chomping, the newly acquired “no”, the fuzzy post-nap hair, the worrying about something being dirty, the exceptional pot belly, and outgrown outfit, this video is all Grae.

Peel Banana

Miss G’s very favourite song with actions.

I apologize for you having to endure a full 45 seconds of my singing, but I assure you, the cuteness of the actions and dancing is worth it. ☺

I know that beds are meant for sleeping, but sometimes you just have to break the rules and have a good jump. ☺

Keeping Busy

5 / 1 / 125 / 2 / 12

As I was preparing dinner late this afternoon, Grae came into the kitchen and sweetly asked for hangers.  I immediately knew what she wanted to do – she wanted to hang them on her crib railing as I do when setting out her outfit choices in the morning.  I retrieved a great big handful of hangers from the top of her closet, handed them over, and she was pleased as punch.  I was back at my cooking when she came in a requested more hangers, to which I suggested she take down the ones she had and put them back up afterwards.  Off she went.  A couple of minutes later, I sneakily poked my head around the corner to find this…

My little work bee always has to keep busy, even if it involves creating jobs for herself, undoing them, and redoing them again.  ♥

An Afternoon Ritual

5 / 1 / 125 / 2 / 12

This has become an after nap time ritual in our house…  These three wooden puzzles perfectly in line, the pieces strewn upon the floor, some chill music, and a very determined little puzzle master at work.  Oh ya – some serious bed head is also necessary.

Gracen’s Favourite “Game”

I swear Grae could do this all day long everyday.  A cozy spot + a good book + someone to ask questions  = one very content little lady.

An Afternoon Downtown

4 / 9 / 124 / 10 / 12

There’s something wonderful about downtown Vancouver on a sunshiny day.  The crowds seem more laid-back, the people are friendlier, and the sidewalks are lined with performers, artists, and vendors, making it perfectly okay to saunter along leisurely.  So, with yet another gorgeous Vancouver day upon us, Gracen and I packed up our stroller, jumped on the Canada Line, and made our way downtown.  Despite Grae’s surprisely long 3 hour nap, we were lucky enough to make it in time to spend most of Bradley’s lunch hour with him.  We walked along the sidewalks, sat on the art gallery steps, watched an amazing percussion group, and visited Grae’s favourite place – the kids’ section of Chapters.IMG 0264

IMG 0274IMG 0282IMG 0284IMG 0289IMG 0294Gracen enjoyed every minute and was such a little gem all afternoon that we ended up pushing it a little late, eating dinner on the train, skipping bath time, and arriving home to read a couple of stories and crawl into bed.  ♥
