One of the Christmas traditions I just adore? Making a new Christmas ornament with each kiddo every year! It’s such a fun one-on-one project and I think the kids really love hanging their newly made decorations on the tree {and revisiting their old ones each year}. The type of ornament we make is often inspired by something they love or by a favourite book, and this year Sam’s little homemade Christmas truck ornaments were inspired by Little Blue Truck, the star of a collection of books we’ve read again and again.

Do your kids love these books too? They are the sweetest and truly great for any kiddo – not just little truck lovers. Now I will say that Little Blue Truck’s Springtime falls short for me… But the original Little Blue Truck and Little Blue Truck Leads the Way? They’re fantastic and would be a part of all kids’ home libraries if it were up to me.
This one, Little Blue Truck’s Christmas, was the inspiration for our shimmery, snowy, Christmas truck ornaments. Doesn’t Blue look super cute and festive?! We just had to recreate him!
Here’s what you’ll need to do the same…
- a matchbox truck (any small vehicle will do)
- a tiny bottle brush tree (we found ours at Michael’s, but you can find them most craft stores)
- a green pipe cleaner
- 2 teeny red beads (you could use a ribbon tied in a bow instead)
- some Aleene’s Tacky Glue
- a paintbrush for applying glue
- some iridescent sparkle
- scissors
- twine
Okay, ready? This is super easy.
Start off by applying a generous amount of Tacky Glue onto the bottom of your bottle brush tree.
Then firmly place it in the box of the truck. {If you’re using a different type of vehicle, you can lay the tree down on the roof.}
Ta-da!
Next, create a teeny tiny wreath by wrapping an inch or two of pipe cleaner around your paintbrush. Secure it by twisting the ends back onto the wreath and then use a little dab of glue to attach your bead berries or bow.
Using a generous dollop of glue on the front of the vehicle, gently attach your wreath to the front grill. {Aleene’s Tacky Glue is amazing and will totally hold onto the wreath as it dries.}
Next up, dab a small amount of glue onto your tree and truck top with your paintbrush…
And then sprinkle on some glitter snow.
Isn’t our little blue truck looking like a Christmas truck already?
Now I will say that when I first brought up the idea of this project, Sam wanted absolutely no part in it. There was no way he was taking his trucks and turning them into something to hang on the tree – absolutely NO. WAY. But once we looked at the illustrations of Little Blue in the Christmas book together, he quickly came around on making his little blue truck look Christmassy too! And then once we had done that? Well he just didn’t want to stop! {I mean how cute is this little fleet of Christmassy vehicles?! I’m in love.}
Once the glue was mostly set, I added some twine around the trees laying on the vehicle’s roofs and gave every ornament a loop to hang from.
Aren’t they sweet?
Now I know that it sounds silly to be thinking so far in advance, but between the ornaments we make and the ones I gift Grae and Sam each year, my hope is that one day when they’re ready to move out {like when they’re 30}, my kids have a beautiful collection of childhood ornaments to take along with them… {Anyone else think about stuff like this??}
