Kinder Cafe in Port Coquitlam

3 / 13 / 123 / 14 / 12

Today Gracen and I ventured out to Port Coquitlam to meet up with a bunch of other mommies and munchkins at Kinder Cafe, an indoor playground geared towards preschool-aged children and their coffee-loving mamas.  It was a bit of an adventure getting there (we missed our exit amidst the construction and ended up having to go into Surrey, loop around, and come back over the Port Mann Bridge with rush hour traffic), but it was well worth it.  The play structures were engaging, the coffee was delish, and the company was wonderful, as always.  Gracen had a great time playing and hanging out with her friends and was still talking about it tonight during dinner.  Overall, I’d say that it was a hit.  Here are a few photos from our visit:

IMG 7571Thrilled to be in a bouncy castle just for little kids.

IMG 7572She went absolutely nuts in here.  There was a lot of shrieking, running, clapping, jumping, and ball throwing involved.

IMG 7573Who knew that 10:30 a.m. = bubble time at Kinder Cafe?!  The munchkins LOVED it.

Play Gym at Sunset

3 / 9 / 123 / 16 / 12

I don’t know what we’ve been up to, but we certainly haven’t doing our regular Friday mornings up at the Sunset Community Centre play gym sessions…  Maybe it’s because the weather’s been getting nicer and we’ve been spending more time outdoors, or maybe it’s because the lovely teacher, Aggie, no longer runs the sessions, but either way, it was nice to be back today.  Gracen loves it, it’s nice to chat with the same moms each week, and it’s just a few blocks up from our house.  How can you go wrong really?

Gracen was very excited to be back.  There was some regular play involved…

IMG 7431IMG 7434IMG 7436

But she spent the majority of her time frantically running from one car/trike/bike to the next, climbing on, pushing the centre of the wheel/handlebars, and declaring, “Beep, beep, beep!”IMG 7423IMG 7425IMG 7427IMG 7428IMG 7430

I’m not sure what this is all about, but hopefully it’s not a reflection of her Mama’s driving.  :)

Rock Heaven

3 / 8 / 123 / 8 / 12

IMG 7381Gracen LOVES rocks.  It’s a new obsession of hers.  Everywhere we go, she stops to carefully select new rocks to add to her collection.  We take them in the house, wash them with warm soapy water, and add them to her yellow bowl that sits on our counter.  Crazy, I know.  Well imagine today when we pulled up to our usual scrapbook supply store and found this instead of a sidewalk.  Miss G was in rock heaven.  She sat there for several minutes, and inspected rock after rock in order to fulfill Mama’s ‘just one’ rule.  It took some time, but she finally picked out the perfect one and we carried on our way.  Silly little doodle.

The Bloedel Conservatory

3 / 6 / 123 / 6 / 12

This afternoon Gracen and I finally ventured out to a place we’ve been meaning to visit for a while – the Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park.  Grae was in heaven before making it anywhere near the dome.  The surrounding area is home to sculptures, fountains, and endless room to run, which was more than enough for our easy-to-please little lady.  We took our time, explored a little, watched the fountains again and again, and eventually made our way to the doors.  Inside the conservatory is a little slice of the tropics.  Exotic plants and tropical flowers fill the dome from ground to ceiling and birds fly freely over head.  Mix that with the warmth, humidity, and sounds of running water and birds calling, and you feel like you’re on vacation in the rainforest.  Of course, Grae soaked up every second.  Birds, flowers, sunshine… This place was right up her alley.  We slowly wandered along the paths visiting birds and stopping to smell flowers along the way.  The absolute favourite of the day had to be a little cove inhabited by several small birds and one larger parrot.  There was a puddle of water in front and Gracen was absolutely fascinated by the fact that the birdies were having a bath.  She repeatedly signed ‘Bird. Bath!’ with big eyes and a look of disbelief on her face as we watched them and then requested that we go back to the bird bath several times later on.    Here are some photos of our afternoon:

IMG 7328Our visit was probably only an hour long (and that was walking through twice), but it was so much fun.  We’ll definitely be back again soon, and hopefully this time with a picnic to enjoy outside afterwards.

A Day Outdoors

3 / 5 / 123 / 5 / 12

It was a chilly day here in Vancouver, but that didn’t stop us from spending the day outside… It started with an early morning walk around the block.  Now that may not sound like a lot, but when you stop to splash in each puddle and visit with each picketing teacher, just one loop around the block takes a significant amount of time.

IMG 7023

IMG 7031When we originally walked out the door, Gracen had bent over, tapped her pointer on the sidewalk and said, “Star. Star!”  I asked if she wanted to draw stars on the sidewalk with chalk (she’s all about stars and hearts right now) and she enthusiastically nodded ‘yes’.  I told her that we would do just that upon our return, and she certainly didn’t forget.  The second we stepped up on our walk, she reminded me of my promise. We worked on our sidewalk art for a while, and then Grae focused her attention on expanding the size of her ever-growing rock collection.

IMG 7041

IMG 7039We headed inside for a few minutes, but Gracen wasn’t done with being outdoors.  As I tidied the kitchen and got started on lunch, she decided she’d have a tea party in the solarium.  She played for a long while as I secretly snuck peeks of her pouring cups of tea and nibbling on plastic sweets.  I got away with it several times, but eventually got caught.  It turned out that being caught was a huge treat, because when I did, I got showered with ‘through the screen kisses’ and then got to enjoy this little show of funny faces.IMG 7055IMG 7056IMG 7058IMG 7063IMG 7064
It wasn’t easy, but I lured her in with a grilled avocado and cheddar sandwich (avocado being the key factor) and a banana almond oatmeal smoothie.  But after lunch and a great nap, guess who was back outside having afternoon tea?IMG 7068
I took that as a hint and decided we better fit in some more outdoor time before winding down for the day.  We got bundled up for the cold, jumped in the vehicle, and literally just drove around looking for a fun new playground to visit.  Gracen was my little helper as usual, and every time she saw a play structure or open green space, she’d shout, “Par!” (park) from the back seat.  We eventually found ourselves at an old school in the Marpole area and the playground was perfect.IMG 7072IMG 7077IMG 7096
We played until our hands were numb and our noses were red and then headed home to defrost with a hot dinner and a warm bath.

To the Beach with Manmaw

3 / 4 / 123 / 4 / 12

Today we headed down to our favourite beach to enjoy our last couple of hours with Grandma Charlotte.  We played on the playground for a little bit and then made our way to the walking path (towards Cornwall Ave and Starbucks), to which Gracen immediately exclaimed, “Drink! Drink!”, knowing that a steamed milk with cinnamon was in her near future…  Smart little cookie!  Puppy kisses, puddle jumping, sea glass collecting, and extreme swinging were also involved.  Here’s the proof:

IMG 7007‘Wheeeeeee!’

Our morning ended with a tuckered out little lady falling asleep on the drive home (an hour before her usual nap time), therefore missing out on saying goodbye to her “Manmaw”.  Oopsies.  Although she didn’t wake up desperately searching for Grandma like we thought she might, she did remind us about where Grandma sleeps and where she sits at the table several times throughout the remainder of the day.  Not to worry my sweet girl, Grandma’s last words were, “Make sure that foamie doesn’t go too far – I’ll be back at the end of March!”  Days spent in the backyard gardening with Grandma are coming very soon, Miss G.

A Day with Gma Char

3 / 3 / 123 / 3 / 12

Today we got in a full day of quality time with Grandma Charlotte (a.k.a. ‘Gma Char’).  It involved a Granville Island visit, some shopping, several tea parties, plenty of cuddles, and a giant Costco trip.  All in all, I’d say it was a pretty great day.   Here are a few photos I took along the way.

18 Month Check Up

2 / 28 / 123 / 1 / 12

IMG 6593This afternoon we had Miss G’s 18 month wellness check up.  Although I love knowing that she’s growing, gaining weight, and reaching her milestones as expected, I absolutely dread the vaccination part.  I’ve always disliked it (especially in Kuwait at those terrifying government clinics), but now that she’s older, it’s worse. Afterwards, she looks up at me with these big tear-filled eyes with a ‘Mama, you knew that was going to happen’ expression.  Break my mama heart.  The good news is that this time around it was only one shot compared to the four she had to get at twelve months.  And getting to choose an animal sticker and play with toys afterwards seemed to pretty much make up for the poke.

The other good news is that our nurse was really happy with all of her measurements, skills, and progress. This months measurements may be a little off because it was the first time she was weighed with clothes and shoes on, and it was the first time she was standing when her height was measured, but close enough.  Here are her 18 month stats:

  • Weight – 25 pounds (up from 21 pounds at her 12 month visit, jumping her up from the 50th percentile to the 65th)
  • Height – 80 centimetres (up from 76 centimetres at her 12 month visit, moving her way down from the 95th percentile to the 45th!)
  • Head Circumference – 48 centimetres (up a half centimetre from her 12 month visit, moving her just a tiny bit from the 90th percentile down to the 87th)

IMG 6620When we originally pulled up to the clinic, my unsuspecting little lady saw the playground at the school across the street and started bouncing with excitement.  Of course, little did she know, we weren’t there to play.  I told her that we were going to visit the nurses, and afterwards, we’d go to a park.  So that’s exactly what we did.

IMG 6602It was freezing cold and we were the only ones there, but she was pleased none the less.

IMG 6604We played, ran, slid, and hid and then headed home to have dinner and a warm bath!

Baby Love

2 / 28 / 123 / 1 / 12

IMG 6586Gracen absolutely loves our friends’ little man to bits.  To the point where it’s an obsession.  Today Steph and Tate came over for lunch and a visit, and she literally could not leave his side.  The poor little guy just wanted some peace and quiet to slumber in the sunshine, and Grae was all up in his business the entire time.  And imagine her dismay when it was nap time!  She was utterly insulted by the fact that I would even consider making her sleep while there was a baby in our house.  She fell asleep crying “Buubba…  Buuuuubba…” (baby) and woke up 30 minutes later pointing out her door and calling “Bubba!  Bubba!” in desperation.  I guess we have to make sure we see Tate more often!

Star

2 / 27 / 123 / 1 / 12

IMG 6583This afternoon, as I tidied up the kitchen, Miss G sat at her little table happily colouring and drawing.  That is, until she came into the kitchen with narrowed eyes, a furrowed brow, and a serious, “Mama?”  She held her pudgy little hand out to me and looked at the floor.

IMG 6578In my most serious mama voice, I said, “Gracen, what is this?”  After a short pause, she looked up at me with bright eyes and upturned lips and proudly announced, “Star!”

How can you be upset with that?  :)
