Super Spooky Buggy Water

Super Spooky Buggy Water | Mama Papa Bubba

Sometimes I do weird things just to see Miss G’s reaction.  I don’t know…. I can’t help myself I guess.  Seeing her little face light up with excitement {or crinkle up in total confusion} makes my heart happy.  So today when she asked for a glass of water during her quiet play time, I surprised her with a Halloweenified glass of what she’s deemed ‘buggy water’.  {Doesn’t it look sort of like a glass full of baby spiders?  Yum!}

Oh, you should have seen her face.  It was half ‘this is the coolest thing ever!’ and half ‘Mama, what on earth are you doing now??’  The first words out of her mouth were, ‘WHAT IN THE WORRRRLD?!’  Hah!

The truth is, I drink a non-spooky, lime-infused version of this buggy water all the time.  In fact, Miss G’s tried it on several occasions and never really loved it {though I really don’t blame her as my version is quite tart}.  But take away the sourness and add a couple of colourful straws, a pretty bow, and a big spider on the top, and it’s a total hit.  Win!  Especially since it’s super healthy.

Now I know it looks very strange, but all it is is water and one other ingredient – chia seeds!  And because chia seeds don’t taste like anything at all, it’s just like drinking water with teeny tiny little gelatine bubbles in it.  And because chia is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and fibre, as wells as protein and minerals, this spooky little drink packs quite a nutritional punch.

To make it, I simply fill a small mason jar with cool water, add a tablespoon of chia seeds, then put the lid on tightly before giving it a really good shake.  While you can drink it immediately, I like putting it in the fridge overnight to allow the seeds plenty of time to plump up and absorb the water.  Then serve with a festive straw and a spider on the side. ☺

Inspiration for our buggy water came from Oh She Glows’ chia fresca, which is delicious!

  1. I’m popping back in to let you know that I’ve featured you at this week’s Pinning for Play link party! Thanks for linking up with us. My next target is my sister! Mwa, ha, ha. She’ll totally freak if I hand her this drink. Especially with a spider on it.
