There are few things I love more than spending the day outside, throwing together a couple of salads, and finishing the day off with a barbecue in the backyard. And thanks to our gorgeous Vancouver weather and Miss G’s request to eat dinner outside, today was the first of the season.
Dinner for three.
Spinach and baby kale salad, barbecued chicken, parmesan cauliflower mash, Israeli couscous and avocado salad.
Filthy, hungry, and happy.
Backyard barbecue season is on its way back. Yay for that.

Is there anything more fun than receiving a surprise package with your name on it? Probably not.
This morning Miss G woke up to a great big box from her Manmaw Sue and it was like she had won the lottery. While some kids her age might tear through the package, throwing opened items aside to make way for new ones, this girl does not. She carefully unfolds the paper around an item, takes a moment to figure out what it is and what it does, and then sets it aside before carefully selecting the next. I love that about her. She genuinely appreciates each item. Glitter? Amazing! Shiny eggs? Awesome. Stickers? Even better! Everything is special.
And she didn’t waste any time putting her new Easter supplies to good use, either. We took out a big bin, added some of our homemade coloured rice and a few of her new Easter goodies, and she instantly had a scooping/dumping/egg shaker making station.

We woke up to an absolutely gorgeous sunny day today and immediately packed up a lunch and headed down to our favourite beach-front playground. As always, Grae spent tons of time climbing ladders, sliding through tunnels, riding the swings, and spinning on the merry-go-round, but during this visit, she spent just as much time climbing on and off this log, adding bits and pieces, and tending to her delicious-looking mud soup.
It makes my heart happy that dirt, sticks, and water can still inspire just as much play as it did when I was little.

This morning I was beckoned by the usual “Mama, Mama – bum wiiiipe!” call from the bathroom, and arrived to find this. My little lady, perched up on the toilet, sporting self-drawn Papa eyebrows just as I had drawn on her yesterday during our face painting station fun. Hah!
Never a dull moment!

Oy. The last couple of weeks have been tough. Until recently, Miss G has been a pretty happy-go-lucky, easy-to-please, easy to reason with little lady. Even in moments of real frustration, getting down on her level and calmly talking out the problem was a sure fix. Even when she was very little. And don’t get me wrong. That sweet, loving little girl is still here and melts my heart on a daily basis. But goodness gracious, have we ever been on an emotional roller coaster lately. Little things, like turning off a light, filling a pink cup with water, or putting away a book can set off a wave of disappointment, whining, and tears. She wanted to do it. She wanted the blue one. She was going to read it again. We’ve had our first temper tantrums, she’s marched to her room and closed the door loudly behind her, and today she pulled out the big guns and shouted “I NO LOVE YOU, MAMA!” (ugh). We’re doing our best, figuring things out as we go (thank goodness for Janet Lansbury), and focusing all of the good times, but it can sure be exhausting some days. Especially given my recent run in with a tee ball bat and a set of stairs which has left me hobbling around with highly unattractive purple and blue swollen foot.
Today was just one of those mornings. It started well, Gracen asked to go to one of our local play gyms, and we began getting ready. All was good until she wasn’t able to put her tights on on her own and I was in the shower instead of helping her immediately. And it just went downhill from there. By the time we were ready and had all of our issues sorted out, play gym was half over and would have been three quarters over by the time we drove there. So what do you do when you’ve spent the last two hours preparing to leave the house, but it’s now almost lunchtime and you know that an early lunch and early nap is the best thing for everyone involved?
An indoor picnic! It was special enough that Miss G wasn’t completely crushed about not making it out the door to play gym, but kept our daily routine moving along and neared us to nap time, which was desperately needed. We laid a blanket out in the living room, gathered a few cushions, and turned on some happy music in hopes of a reset.
Miss G requested a “special picnic lunch” and chose a random assortment of foods cut into small pieces, in true toddler fashion. Her lunch included orange pepper slices, baby carrots, grilled chicken cubes, chunks of aged cheddar, a multigrain mini bun with hummus, kiwi slices and some fruit water.
This mama, on the other hand, needed something more meal-ish, especially after the morning we’d had. For me, baby kale and baby spinach topped with fresh veggies, feta, cilantro dressing, and a few mini chickpea patties (yum).
Grae thought the entire set up was very special and went back to being my happy little sidekick almost as soon as we began putting it together.
And thank goodness for that.

So, on Sunday evening I had a bit of an unfortunate {and awkward and embarrassing} incident with a set of stairs and a poorly placed tee ball bat. The end result (other than me laying face down on the front lawn in agony as neighbours were out for their evening strolls?) was a very sore swollen foot and crutches I’m terrible at using. Not good when you’ve got a busy little lady that’s used to go-go-go-ing.
A perk to being the lame mom who has to sit and watch on the sidelines during our usual parent and tot ballet class however? Being able to snap a few photos of our little ballerina in action.
She’s sweet, isn’t she?

One of the little traditions we started when Gracen was born was the celebration of her half birthday. Because well, why not really? That extra ‘half’ is a big deal when your age is still in the single digits. It’s nothing fancy… Just a fun day with “cupcakes” after dinner. This year was extra special as it fell on a weekend which meant Papa got to join in on the fun.
It started with Miss G waking up to a doorway full of balloons, ended with chocolate coconut banana muffins topped with freshly whipped cream and candles, and had muffin making, playing in the rain, an awesome presentation of The Cat in the Hat, and a sushi dinner sprinkled throughout the middle.
Oh, and there was this… A bath filled with bubbles, balloons, and a shrieky jumpy excited girl.
Happy half birthday, my love.

Brrrrr! This morning we bundled up and headed down to Second Beach in Stanley Park to enjoy the sunshine. It was absolutely freezing and the wind was so strong that my ears felt like they were on fire from the cold, but Miss G didn’t mind one bit. She had two new playgrounds to explore and discover, plus many, many warm layers, so the cold was the last of her worries.
Here’s our morning in photographs…
Bundled up for the cold.
Super excited.
‘I thought we were just having a leisurely swing, Papa?’
‘Everyone hold on!’
Mama and G.
Slide race!
The perfect hiding spot.
Moccasin feet.
‘Uh, Papa? What are you doing?’
Wheeeee!

Today Gracen and I were lucky enough to be invited to check out Family Day at the BC Home & Garden Show at BC Place. Admittedly, we didn’t spend a whole lot of time browsing what most people come to the show to see (the home and garden exhibits obviously), but we definitely would have spent a whole lot more time down there if a) we owned a home and b) if we didn’t have plans to move overseas come August. From spa pools to lane way homes to landscaping and cleaning products, every topic pertaining to home owning/renovation/care was covered.
Where we spent most of our time was in the Kid Zone, set up especially for Family Day. Gracen had a wonderful time roaming around visiting all of the booths and was thrilled to see her favourite ever photographer, Bethany, from Images by Bethany at the Vancouvermom.ca booth. Bethany took some photos of her in front of a rainy day backdrop which are bound to be gorgeous, so I’ll be sure to share them when we get them back. Along the way, we picked up some Monkey Toast, learned about Kibooco, and did a little project at Beesafe.
One of the highlights was definitely having Miss G’s face painted by Kristal of Faceaballoonza. Grae selected a turtle and Kristal decorated her face with this gorgeously elaborate turtle painting in two minutes flat.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… There’s nothing as adorable as toddler ballet. The toe tapping, the pizza feet, the beach ball arms, and the freeze dancing… It’s ridiculously cute. We’re back for a second round of our Ballet with Billie classes, and though Grae can still be a little shy walking into the studio, she settles in right away, lets loose, and even gets a little silly sometimes. The best part is that she’ll often ask in the morning, “Is today Tuesday, Mama? We go to dance class today?” and when it’s not, she wants to know exactly how many days are left until we get to go again.
Keep up to date with all of Billie’s classes around Vancouver here.

One of the most anticipated events in the life of Miss G? Visiting Papa’s school. And I mean it’s right up there with going for bicycle rides, having friends over to play, and special baking projects. Swing by the school to quickly pick-up Papa and continue along the way? You’ll very likely have a slightly insulted little lady on your hands.
Needless to say, today’s visit to watch a game of basketball and have a few minutes of Kid Pix time was a total hit. Gracen made some big friends during the game, she was oohed and ahhed over by all of the girls, and she got to march around the school like she was a full-time student.

Gracen’s been interested in letters, their names, their sounds, and words that begin with them for quite some time now. She’s also known how to verbally spell her name for just as long (longer actually), but the two had never really come together. While she’s asked me to print her name quite a lot, she’s never attempted to ‘make’ her name using her foam bathtub letters, her letter magnets, or any of the other alphabet manipulatives we have around the house.
Until tonight that is…
This evening she came to me as I was preparing dinner and said, “Mama, come see!” I went into her room to find that she’d climbed up onto her shelf, retrieved her baby blocks, and was carefully arranging them in order to spell her name.
Smart little cookie.

A little tradition we started back when Gracen was just 5 months old and we were living in Kuwait is an annual Valentine’s tea. Today we hosted our third celebration with a bunch of Grae’s good buddies, some awesome mamas, delicious treats, and some messy fun. The sun was shining, us mamas got to sneak in conversations in between chasing toddlers, and the kiddos played happily.
Here are some snapshots from our morning…
