We Heart Kits Beach

2 / 17 / 123 / 1 / 12

Although we’re perfectly content living in a little house {just barely} on the east side of the city, there is definitely something magical about Vancouver’s westside. There’s just a different energy about it. Maybe it’s just that before moving to the Middle East I had spent the better part of a decade living there and it feels more like home…  I don’t know.  Either way, I know that I want to spend some time showing Gracen some of my favourite places from times past.

With that in mind, this morning we geared up, pretended not to notice the spitting rain too much, and headed down to an old favourite, Kits Beach.  We walked along the oceanfront, visited with puppies, played at the playground, put our {gumboot-protected} feet in the water, collected seashells, ate lunch on a giant log, bird watched, and jumped in puddles.  Okay…and took a ridiculous amount of photos. :)  It was the perfect Vancouver morning with my little lady. ♥

Book Mountain

2 / 16 / 123 / 1 / 12

IMG 5770Between talking and signing, Grae is a pretty awesome little communicator.  But in instances like these, I wish she could tell me more.  We were at home playing when she stopped, went to her room, got her fuzzy blanket, and laid it out on the floor just so.  Then one-by-one, she started transferring her books from the baskets in the living room onto the blanket.  She ensured that each book was fully on the blanket, and if one accidentally slid off a little bit, she’d go back and place it back on the pile until it stayed exactly where she wanted it.  When the baskets in the living room were empty, she started retrieving more from the bookshelf in her room.  By the end of it all, we had a mountain of books (and Sharpies) on a blanket in the middle of our house.  What started this mission, I’m not sure…

Popcorn

2 / 16 / 123 / 1 / 12

IMG 5780A little while ago, we let Gracen try some plain stove-popped popcorn for the first time…  And boy, oh boy, does she ever love it.

IMG 5782Apparently she also loves flinging it out of the bowl and all over the place.

IMG 5783Time for a smaller bowl and fewer pieces…

Broadway

2 / 15 / 123 / 1 / 12

Bradley had the day off today and since I didn’t get a call to sub until it was too late to actually make it out to Surrey on time, we got to have an unexpected family day… Yay for that.  We’ve been kind of missing living on the westside of the city lately, so we decided to head down to Broadway to browse the shops and grab some coffee.

IMG 5758Uncle Brett works on Broadway, so we were hoping we’d see him when we stopped to peek in the window of his store.  Sure enough, he was there!  We popped in for a little visit, and lucky for us, he was able to escape for a bit and join us for an afternoon snack at the sushi restaurant next door.

IMG 5760Afterwards, we visited Kidsbooks (which was amazing as always) and a few other shops before stopping at Caffeé Artigiano for a hot drink.  Even Baby G got a little steamed milk with cinnamon.  She was beyond excited about it and slurped up her last bit  before I had even had three sips of my coffee.  That’s our little milk-loving monster. :)

G’s 2nd Annual Valentine’s Tea

2 / 14 / 129 / 22 / 13

Today we hosted Gracen’s second mamas and munchkins Valentine’s tea.  It was a very different scene than last year’s party where us Kuwait mamas sat around a blanket of rolly polly babies while chatting and sipping on hot coffee.  This morning was wonderfully chaotic, and by the end of it, I think all of us mommies had worked up a sweat.  Just goes to show how much things change in one year.  Here are some photos from this morning’s mamas and munchkins tea, complete with three curious and busy toddlers and one adorable 6 month old.

The decor:

IMG 5550

Sidewalk chalk art.

IMG 5561

The mantle.

IMG 5563

Pink tulips, a free Valentine’s print, a paint chip garland, and a candy bar we didn’t even get to because there were so many other sweets.

IMG 5620

Gracen’s bedroom door decorated with hearts she painted and hung {mostly} by herself.

Mama treats:

IMG 5611

Dark and white chocolate covered strawberries.

IMG 5612

Raspberry white chocolate scones.

IMG 5617

Fruit salsa and cinnamon sugar chips (adapted from this recipe).

IMG 5696

Pain au chocolat.

IMG 5698

Cookies from Mozart Bakery. (There was also the most delicious dip with strawberries and heart-shaped fruit cut outs, but somehow I missed taking a photo.  Shoot.)

Munchkin treats:

IMG 5613

Fruit leather hearts.

IMG 5638

Melon hearts.

IMG 5643

Mini heart-shaped margherita pizzas.

Activities:

IMG 5605

Mess-free finger painting station.

IMG 5631

Mural wall.

The munchkins:

IMG 5676

Jackson.

IMG 5680

Ainsley.

IMG 5691

Keagan.

IMG 5675

And of course this little pizza monster.

The action:

IMG 5664

Snack time for Ainsley and Jackson.

IMG 5666

Drool never looked so cute!

IMG 5670

Finger painting toddlers.

IMG 5677

Obsessed with Keagan’s soft blanket. In fact, she loved it so much that she insisted I take her ponytails out so she could roll around on it without her head hurting.

IMG 5683

Checking things out.

IMG 5686

Recess time at the school across the street looks pretty cool.

IMG 5689

Baby love.

IMG 5694

Team cleaning.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Could it be?

2 / 14 / 123 / 1 / 12

First of all, a little background info…  Lately Gracen has really been into hearts and stars.  I’m not sure how this interest came about really, but we do have a wooden shape puzzle that we play with daily and we’ve borrowed several books about shapes from our local library.  Either way, the girl likes hearts and stars.  She sees them everywhere (on posters, in store windows, in books,  at the playground) and enthusiastically points them out while declaring, “Heart!” or “Star!”

IMG 5659Well today, just before her guests arrived, she was happily drawing on her chalkboard when she stopped, pointed, and said, “Heart!  Heart!”  Now I know that every parent thinks that their child is a genius and I’m 100% guilty of thinking Grae is quite clever, but is it just me or does this really look like a heart?!

IMG 5661Here’s a closer look. Am I just crazy?  Does anyone else see the orange heart?  Now I’m sure it was just a fluke, but either way, this mama is impressed.

Valentines by Grae

2 / 14 / 121 / 28 / 13

I remember loving making Valentine’s Day cards for my friends when I was little, so I was very excited to make them with Gracen for the first time this year…  Here’s what she shared with her little friends and cousins today:

NewImage‘Have a colourful Valentine’s Day!’ cards with homemade heart-shaped crayons for her little friends.  (We cheated a little bit and borrowed this already made card.)

IMG 5701A bigger version of the same card for her cousins Korbin, Chayton, and Kinslee.

IMG 5476And also for the cousins – felt heart hair clips for the little girls…

IMG 5475And felt tic-tac-toe boards for the big boys.

IMG 5655And something special for Papa too…

Valentine’s Day with Miss Grae

2 / 14 / 129 / 22 / 13

IMG 5569

Gracen and I had a jammed-packed fun-filled Valentine’s Day today and it all started out like this.

IMG 5576

With heart-shaped pancakes, strawberry slices, and fresh whipped cream.  Gracen was in heaven.

IMG 5577

After breakfast, Grae opened her little Valentine’s Day bag from Bradley and I.

IMG 5582

Inside she found a new photo book called Gracen Loves…

IMG 5587

A pretty little shirt (that she helped pick out last week)…

IMG 5592

And a new set of felt hair clips made with love by Mama.

IMG 5624

With the help of her Papa, she got dressed and ready for the day while I zipped around the house doing a few last minute things for the tea.

IMG 5651

This morning when she woke up Papa for breakfast, she marched into the bedroom and proudly presented Bradley with this card she made. (From the bottom of my heart…)

IMG 5647

(To the tips of my toes… I love YOU!)

IMG 5601

And before he left for work, Grae snuggled in closely and they danced around the living room for a few minutes. ♥

IMG 5607

Before her guests arrived, Gracen tested out the mess-free finger paint station we set up on the front window.

IMG 5707

After a wonderfully busy (and slightly crazy) Valentine’s tea (separate post to come) and a much needed nap, Grae had an afternoon snack of strawberries and fresh whipped cream.

IMG 5720

And then we headed to the park to get some fresh air and enjoy the day’s last hour of sunshine.

IMG 5730

When we got home, my sous chef and I started working on dinner.

IMG 5733

This little lady loves helping in the kitchen.  Not to mention that having her cook with me has solved our recent  “witching hour” dinner making disasters.

IMG 5741

For Mama and Grae – chicken, sundried tomato, roasted garlic, and feta pizza.  (I’m embarrassed to say that Grae ate 5 – yes, FIVE – mini heart-shaped pizzas at her little party today and I had already planned pizza for dinner too.  BIG helping of steamed green veggies needed on the side!)

IMG 5744

And for Papa – prosciutto and caramelized onion pizza.

IMG 5750

And if we hadn’t overdone the heart thing yet, heart-shaped bananas for dessert.

Overall, a wonderful day with my little valentine.  ♥

Party Prep

2 / 13 / 129 / 22 / 13

Tomorrow morning Gracen is having a handful of little friends (and their mamas) over for a Valentine’s Day tea, so this afternoon was all about party prep.  We ran errands, picked up some groceries, cleaned house, and got things ready for her pint-sized guests.

IMG 5520

Gracen helped out by testing out the mural paper I hung on the wall while she was napping.

IMG 5532

Then we headed outside to do our usual sidewalk chalk thing.

IMG 5535

Gracen is all about hearts and stars right now, so she was quite pleased that we were filling our walk with all hearts of all shapes and sizes.

IMG 5538

Now let’s just hope it doesn’t rain overnight!

Homemade Finger Paint

2 / 13 / 125 / 22 / 13

IMG 5482In preparation for Little G’s Valentine’s Day tea, this morning we experimented with making our own finger paint.  I found the recipe on Pinterest a long while back, and knew it would come in handy one day soon.

IMG 5485Gracen carefully added all of our ingredients into a large measuring cup first…

IMG 5486And then enthusiastically mixed it up!

IMG 5492Then we warmed the mixture on the stove…

IMG 5496Separated it into small bowls, added a few drops of food colouring, and stirred it well.  It looks pretty, right?

We’ll have to use the paint a little more (right now we’ve just got in zip-close bags for mess-free painting), but I’m not sure that I’m sold on this recipe.  Although it’s very quick and easy to make, uses ingredients that most people already have in their kitchen, and has a great texture while warm, ours turned out like Jello when cooled.  It did soften up again when stirred well, but I think next time we’ll try cutting down the amount of corn starch a little.  The other important thing that the recipe doesn’t mention is that the mixture needs to be stirred constantly while heating.  We didn’t do that the first time around and ended up with a clumpy, bumpy mess!  We’ll have to see what it looks like when we actually put it on paper…

PEEK!

2 / 13 / 123 / 1 / 12

Gracen never tires of this game…

IMG 5451Hmmm…  Has anyone seen my Gracen Girl?

IMG 5449Each time she popped out of the blanket she shouted an enthusiastic “BOO!” and let out a pleased-with-herself giggle.  Come to think of it, I never really tire of this game either… :)

Breakfast Helper

2 / 13 / 123 / 1 / 12

IMG 5442This morning Gracen helped me make one of our favourite ever breakfast dishes – Lottie + Doof’s baked oatmeal. (You can find the recipe here.  I normally follow it fairly closely, but I go very easy on the maple syrup and add some ground flax and wheatgerm for added nutrition.)

IMG 5444We normally make it with blueberries, but this morning we decided to switch things up a little and made it with raspberries instead.  Naturally, Gracen was the designated taste tester.

IMG 5447After all that hard work in the kitchen, this little lady ate and then asked for a washcloth.  I gave her one and found her below her chair a few minutes later “cleaning up” her mess.  :)

Sunday Play Gym

2 / 12 / 123 / 1 / 12

Brad had the day off today, so we all headed down to Hillcrest Centre for their Sunday morning family social and play gym session.  Here are a few snapshots from our visit:

IMG 5426IMG 5432IMG 5436

The rest of the day involved the usual Sunday activities – snuggles with our little lady, some work around the house, and some time outside.

Crafternoon

2 / 11 / 123 / 1 / 12

IMG 5350Today we spent our afternoon doing a bunch of little art projects for Valentine’s Day.

IMG 5363Gracen happily drew a “picture” on the back of each of her little friends’ cards.

IMG 5375All we have to do tomorrow is attach the heart-shaped crayons we made yesterday, and they’ll be done!

IMG 5344Our next project involved punching out hundreds of little paint chip hearts…  Technically Grae wasn’t the one doing the punching, but she was a great assistant.

IMG 5370Her real job was getting each little heart into this container for safe keeping.  Of course this job was right up her alley because it involved transferring objects from one place to another. Little weirdo.

IMG 5372And while all those paper hearts kept Miss G busy, I worked on some Valentine’s Day hair clips for Grae and her little cousin, Kinslee.

IMG 5387Our last project of the afternoon involved a wax / watercolour resist.  First, Gracen scribbled all over white card stock with white crayons…

IMG 5395Then we cut out a bunch of hearts, taped them down to some plastic, and painted them using homemade watercolours.

IMG 5407It took a minute for Grae to really get into the painting part (at first she was squeezing and shaking the paint out of the brush), but once she got the idea, she went for it.

IMG 5409Tada!  Another masterpiece by Miss G. :)  We’ll let them dry overnight and tomorrow she’ll hang them up on her bedroom door.  And just in time.  Only 3 days left!
