Stanley Park Bright Nights

12 / 17 / 1212 / 25 / 12

Today my little lady and I headed down to Stanley Park for our second year at Bright Nights.  Last year, Miss G was just a tiny little thing still riding around in the Ergo, but this year was a whole new ballgame.  She rode the train and pointed out things with one hand while holding my hand with the other, she cruised around the displays taking in the lights, she made friends with the Frosty the Snowman mascots that were strolling around the park, and enjoyed a warm milk and a bag of popcorn as a special treat.

Here’s our evening in photos…

Things that Make G Happy

12 / 17 / 121 / 4 / 13

Gracen was having trouble falling asleep tonight, so I went into her room to talk to her.  I explained that when I’m having a hard time falling asleep, I think about all of the things that make me happy.  I asked if she had any ideas of things she could think about, and without so much as pausing, she began her list…

“Ice cream, gardening, parks, books, Mama, Papa, and sleeping.”

Goodness gracious, I love this little lady.

Puzzle Piece Wreath Ornament

12 / 16 / 1212 / 19 / 12

Puzzle Piece Wreath OrnamentNot too long ago, Miss G ‘s advent calendar pouch included jigsaw puzzle pieces and the instructions required to make a snowflake ornament.  Gracen really enjoyed the project and loves her sparkly snowflake hanging on the tree, so she was excited to find more puzzle pieces and a note saying that they could be used to make a wreath ornament today.

IMG 3586This time, we started with an ‘O’ shaped cardboard base.  Gracen glued her puzzle pieces (this time using just regular white glue) onto the cardboard doughnut, overlapping them as she went along.

IMG 3589When the ‘O’ was covered to her liking, we set it aside to dry for a while.

IMG 3592Later in the day, she came back and painted the puzzle piece wreath all green.  She quickly discovered that dabbing the paint on gave much better coverage than brushing it on, so she went with that method.

IMG 3599When she was done painting, we let the wreath dry again.

IMG 3601Next came the really fun part – decorations!  She chose magenta sequins as holly berries, but you could easily use buttons, mini pompoms, foam circles, or dot stickers too.  Just add some dots of glue to the wreath and pop your decorations on.

IMG 3697The last step was adding a little ribbon bow I’d quickly made for her… Regular white glue worked just fine for this job too.

Later on in the evening, once the frontside was dry, I flipped it over and added a ribbon loop using my glue gun (I had it out already – you could just as easily use white glue or craft glue) and the pretty little ornament was ready for hanging.

‘Sewing’ Station {a creative table idea}

12 / 15 / 1212 / 19 / 12

Sewing StationFor the last few days, Miss G has really been enjoying the new set-up she has happening at her creative table (for a little bit of background info on the whole idea behind her creative table, click here).  While it would probably be more appropriate to call this a beading and lacing station, Gracen saw it and immediately cheered, “A sewing station!”  To her, needles equal sewing, so a sewing station it is.

IMG 3489The sewing station consists of things we mainly already had on hand…  Two types of beads (pony beads and meltable beads like these), a couple of plastic yarn needles strung with wool, a few steel yarn needles strung with embroidery floss, some Wikki Sticks…

IMG 3491And some homemade lacing cards (simply made by cutting shapes out of card stock and cardboard, and punching holes around the edges).

IMG 3514IMG 3509When Grae originally discovered her new sewing materials, she was by far most excited about the needles and thread, and got to beading right away…

IMG 3527IMG 3531IMG 3541After a couple of days, she had completed not only a bracelet for herself (I helped with the tying of course), but one for her Mama too!

IMG 3544After that, she begun working on the lacing cards.  Right now she’s working on a lacing circle that has beads woven throughout.  She works on it a little each day, moving onto something else when she feels like it and returning when the urge returns.

IMG 3701Something that often happens when it comes to her creative table {and sensory play} is that Grae adds to the materials as she goes.  These mini cupcake liners were all her idea.

IMG 3703This is her most recently completed project…  A bracelet for Papa!  He couldn’t be left out, now could he?

Watching:  Her usual Youtube favourites… Robyn’s ‘Call Your Girlfriend’ (the original song this favourite is based on), this video of Taylor Swift’s ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’, and ‘Colours of the Rainbow’ by The {slightly over the top} Gigglebellies.

Listening to:  Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.  Again and again and again.  She’s memorized almost the entire thing over the course of the last 3 days and she sings it to us before nap time and again before bed time (twice – once to each of us), as well as throughout the day.

Playing:  Memory.  She has a couple of card versions, as well as a wooden disc version, and she just can’t get enough.  The thing is that she’s good at it.  Really good.  (So good in fact that she dominated her Papa in a game last week.)

Talking about: Names.  She asks about everyone’s names right now – whether it be someone walking down the street, a fellow elevator passenger, the owner of a cafe we regularly frequent, or an artist we hear on the radio.  She regularly announces her entire name (both middle names and her giant last name) and asks strangers their names too.

Reading:  She’s absolutely loving ‘A Hole is to Dig’ by Ruth Krauss (© 1952) right now.  The “Mud is to jump in and slide in and yell dodleedoodleedoo” page is the funniest thing ever.

Eating:  Every single time I’ve asked her what she’s wanted for lunch or dinner for the last month, the answer has been a immediate and purposeful “Tofu.”.  Besides that, she’s gobbling up apples and giant carrots like there’s no tomorrow and has started a new morning routine… Instead of just having a cup of milk during our morning cuddle in Mama and Papa’s bed, she also wants a little bowl of apple slices or a big peeled carrot to naw on while we read books and watch music videos.  Oh – and her new favourite snack? Cucumber slices on crackers.

Danielle from Sometimes Sweet, a blog I’ve followed for a very long time now, does regular “Currently” posts and I’ve always enjoyed them, so I decided to borrow the idea and tweak it just a bit in order to suit a toddler. ☺

North Pole BC at Maplewood Farms

12 / 14 / 1212 / 19 / 12

I don’t know what it is, but  I’ve hit a major lucky streak recently.  I swear I’ve rarely won anything in my entire life, and throughout the last few months, I’ve won a conference ticket, photo book credit, and most recently, a giveaway from Kidsvancouver.com (an awesome online resource for Lower Mainland families – check it out if you haven’t already!)  My prize?  A family pack of tickets to North Pole BC, operating up at Maplewood Farm this year.  We were very excited to check it out, and luckily the weather cooperated quite nicely for us.

Our evening consisted of story time with Mrs. Claus, a personal visit and photo with Santa, a stop by the North Pole post office, a visit to Santa’s toy workshop, and a quick stop at elf school.  Here is our night in photos…

IMG 3556Waiting patiently for the action to begin.

IMG 3557Story time with Mrs. Claus.

IMG 3560A visit to Santa.

IMG 3564Lovely horses in the post office.

IMG 3570Santa’s toy workshop.

IMG 3581Elf school in the barn.

IMG 3585Goofy Gracen and Papa.

Overall, Gracen had a really good time.  Each element was done nicely and the elves and other staff members were all really lovely.  Did it feel like we were visiting the North Pole?  Well, not really… But I blame that partly on the lack of snow.  The event is a little pricey (everyone 18 months and up pays between $15 and $20 admission, depending on when you go), but you certainly can’t complain when you’ve won your tickets!

Thank you Kidsvancouver.com and North Pole BC!

iPhoneography // At the Border

12 / 12 / 1212 / 13 / 12

IMG 8076Whew.  Today Gracen and I spent over 2.5 hours driving, an addition 1.5 hours sitting at border crossings, and 3 hours bopping around Bellingham running errands and getting some shopping done.  We powered straight through lunchtime and nap time, and through it all, Miss G was an absolute pleasure.

This girl.  She’s my sidekick, my partner in crime, and my biggest fan.  And I couldn’t love her more.

I’m one very blessed mama.

Christmas Nature Wreath

12 / 11 / 1212 / 11 / 12

Christmas Nature WreathFor the last few days, Gracen’s been working on these sweet little nature wreaths at her creative table.

IMG 3425It started out as a very simple painting station with a few cardboard o’s and some paint in different shades of green.

IMG 3433When the paint was dry, I added a few other things into the mix…  Glue, mini pinecones, bits of evergreen tree, and dried out red berries from her autumn nature shelf.

IMG 3435Though this creative table set-up didn’t take off quite like the paper christmas tree one did, it’s been something that she’s come back to each day.  She’ll spend a little bit of time adding to one of her wreaths, move onto something else, and come back another time.

IMG 3437IMG 3439This morning, after walking past the wreath on our door, she asked if she could have some bows for her wreaths, so I brought out my glue gun, cut up some ribbon, and added a few to the table.

IMG 3441After adding her bow, she put on the finishing touches…

IMG 3454And voila!  A beautiful little Christmas wreath made of things {mostly} found outdoors.

Just for Fun: Santa Photo Comparison

12 / 11 / 1212 / 11 / 12

Santa Photos Through the YearsWhile we don’t have a Santa photo for Gracen’s very first Christmas (we were living in Kuwait and didn’t really have the opportunity there, so we planned on getting one taken in Paris while we were on vacation, but ended up spending 3 and a half days in the Frankfurt airport and never making it to France due to weather conditions…), here’s a comparison of Grae’s santa photos for this year and last.  It’s amazing what a year does, isn’t it?  In the first one she still looks like such a baby, and in the second, she’s clearly a little girl (*sob*).

Gracen Visits Santa {2012}

12 / 11 / 1212 / 11 / 12

Gracen’s always been a shy little girl around people she doesn’t know (men more than women for some some reason).  In fact, she started really playing strange between 3 and 4 months old when most babies are still so young that they don’t mind being passed around in the least.

Last Christmas, when we went to visit Santa at a nearby mall, we were thrilled with the fact that both the photographer and Santa were very sensitive to Grae’s cautiousness.  Santa took the time to come over and talk to her while she was still in my arms and let her pet his velvety suit, and the photographer set out a little rocking horse for her to sit on instead of having to sit on Santa’s knee.  The session went really well, the photos turned out beautifully, and our little girl left happy and excited about Santa Claus, which was the most important part.

Given the great experience we had last year, there was no question in my mind that we’d go back to the same place this time around. We’ve been talking about it for the last week or so, and though Grae’s seemed really exciting about seeing Santa, I could definitely sense that she was a little uneasy with the sitting on his knee part.

When we arrived to the mall this morning, we lined up, and enjoyed the entertainment provided by Santa’s playful elves.  Gracen went around collecting their trading cards and loved seeing the tree, hugging Frosty the Snowman, and inspecting Santa’s kitchen as the line up moved through Santa’s village.  When it came to her turn to visit with Santa, she was happy to give him high fives, but didn’t want to sit on his lap.  And you know what?  That was absolutely fine with me.  Having my little girl feel nervous or uncomfortable all in the name of a photograph is just not worth it in my eyes.  Instead, she sat on his rocking horse long enough to snap a couple of quick photos, and then asked to be taken off.  Here are the shots we got this year…

ED1211105243ED1211105300ED1211105258I love how the first one starts out very seriously, in the second you can see a cautious smile sneaking out, and in the third she looks like she’s having a good time.

ED1211105323In the end, the photographer asked if she’d like to sit with both Mama and Santa, and she agreed {although she doesn’t look overly thrilled}.

Overall, I’d say the whole thing went pretty well.  The photos are a perfect representation of Grae, after our mini photo shoot was done she snuck back to give Santa a quick hug, and she hasn’t stopped talking about him since.

♥

For those of you in the Lower Mainland, these photos were taken at Richmond Centre.  I’d highly recommend them as the elves, photographer, Mrs. Claus, and Santa are all absolutely lovely and great with little ones.  They have several package options all available for $25 (we always get the disc of images so we can print and use them as we like) and there’s plenty of entertainment as you wait in line.  For more information, click here.

Gracen’s Christmas Wish List 2012

12 / 10 / 1212 / 10 / 12

Tonight Miss G and I picked up Brad from work.  On the way home, Gracen started telling Papa that we are going to visit Santa tomorrow…

Brad: What kind of present are you going to ask Santa for?

Gracen: A candy cane! (the funny part is that she does not eat candy canes yet… she simply holds them)

Brad: Do you want anything else for Christmas?

Gracen: Ya. Packing peanuts!

I guess we’ll have to see what Santa can do.  ☺

Gracen Sings

This may be a video only a mama can sit all the way through, but every minute seriously melts my heart.  Especially around 4:35 when she attempts to convert her ‘3’ into a ‘2’.  ☺

Magnet Exploration Station

12 / 9 / 1212 / 14 / 12

Today, Miss G and I did a great big deep clean of her room.  During the tidying, down came the epically successful styrofoam structures station.  It was time.  It had been played with every single day for nearly three weeks and was starting to become a giant mess of styrofoam dust and building junk .  Luckily, I had been preparing Miss G for the change for the last few days, so everything got taken apart and tucked away without any issues.

Magnetic Exploration StationWhat I wash’t prepared for however, was the fact that as soon as her toy box top was cleared off and wiped down, she said “Mama tells Grae Grae ’bout da NEW toy box prajet (project)!”  Uhhhh… I hadn’t thought that far ahead.  Oops. I explained to Gracen that I wasn’t sure what would replace her beloved building station, but I would think of something FUN, get it ready during her nap time, and surprise her with it when she woke up.  No pressure.

IMG 3409Since I had about a gazillion other things I had planned to get done during my baby girl’s nap time, I knew the new station had to be something quick and easy to put together.  I dug through our little living room toy box in search of inspiration, came across her bar magnet, and that was that…. A magnet station it was.  I gathered up all kinds of small things from around the house – some magnetic and some not – and placed them on a tray along with the magnet.  At first, I thought I’d just leave it at that, but then I decided it would be fun to add a sorting element since Miss G loves sorting/matching games so much. I remembered coming across this post on Pinterest a long while ago, and though adding ‘magnetic’ and ‘non-magnetic’ jars into the mix felt a little bit too “academic” or teach-y (we don’t really do planned learning activities yet), I decided to give them a shot.  After all, they could always be removed if they were too much. I retrieved 2 mason jars, drew 2 quick sketches (one illustrating magnetic, and the other one non-magnetic), cut them out, and washi taped them onto the jars.  Done!

IMG 3412When Gracen woke up, she asked about her new project immediately (this girl doesn’t forget a thing).  I brought it in, explained that it was a magnet station, and let her jump in.

IMG 3420After a couple of minutes of exploration, I explained the jar drawings to her.  Without hesitation, she started placing things in the appropriate jars.

IMG 3402She was so into it that it didn’t feel like too much at all.

IMG 3403Before long, she’d sorted every last item into the jars and announced, “All done! Dump ’em and do it again!”  (A sure sign of success, I’d say. ☺)

Winter Nature Shelf

12 / 9 / 1212 / 14 / 12

Winter Nature ShelfToday Gracen’s autumn nature shelf got a much needed makeover…

IMG 3387Gone are the crunchy leaves, dried out sunflowers, mini pumpkins, new apples, and shedding cattails…

IMG 3398And in are the bare branches, pinecones, evergreen limbs, and dried red berries.

IMG 3388
IMG 3389
IMG 3391
IMG 3400If we’re striving for accuracy, the title ‘Christmas shelf’ would probably be more appropriate at this point, but we’re sticking with ‘nature shelf’ because soon enough all of the little Christmas extras (many of which were mine when I was little) Miss G carefully selected and added will be tucked away until next year and we’ll be back to having shelves filled with plain ol’ nature things.

IMG 3393And because we don’t have quite as many wintery things as we did autumn-y things, we decided to use the bottom shelves for seasonal books, which Gracen loves having on display.

Here’s a look at our mini transformation…

Autumn to Winter
