Developing Scissor Skills with a Cutting Tray

10 / 16 / 135 / 27 / 19

The last few months have been filled with transitions… Transitions for our whole family, but though they’ve been big for us, they’ve been HUGE for Gracen.  First, we packed up our home in Vancouver and moved out.  Then we moved in with her grandparents where we completely redid her bedroom twice and got rid of the bed she’s always had there to replace it with a different one.  Then, after getting settled in nicely, we embarked on a more than 30 hour journey to the Middle East during which she slept a total of five hours.  When we arrived here in Kuwait, she found herself in a new home {which was no longer a house, but an apartment} with a new room, a new bed, and the bare minimum as far as ‘stuff’ is concerned.  On top of all of that, upon our arrival, she had to make the transition of switching her days and nights.  And you know what?  Our little lady has done phenomenally well.  She’s a trooper, I tell you.  She’s adjusted well, made all sorts of new {old} friends, and seems truly and genuinely happy here.

The only thing I’d say has been challenging now that all of the transitions are said and done, is the fact that we seem to have lost some of her independence somewhere along the way. Don’t get me wrong – when it comes to picking her clothes or putting on her shoes or choosing a snack, she’s still very independent.  But when it comes to playing independently, something we’d worked really hard on in Vancouver, I can see we’ve back tracked quite a ways. Back home, we’d fallen into a wonderful routine that allowed me to shower and pee and do dishes without having a munchkin under my feet.  She’d often choose to play independently in her room or read independently in her book nook, and it was wonderful.  We’d even started letting her play outside in the {fully fenced} backyard all by herself sometimes!  But here? Not so much.

Our apartment here in Kuwait is huge.  Much, much bigger than our house in Vancouver was, and I guess I expected her to make use of all of the space when I had something I needed to do.  Not the case.  It’s okay and I know we’ll get back to where we were, but for now, if I run to the washroom to grab a tissue, pop into the laundry room to deposit a dirty cloth, or head into the kitchen to get a glass of water, I have a little shadow following right behind me.  Always.

Tree of Thanks {things Miss G is thankful for 2013}

10 / 14 / 1311 / 28 / 13

Tree of Thanks | Mama Papa Bubba

Last year I asked Gracen what she was thankful for, and her answers melted my heart.  This year, I decided it would be fun to make a visual representation of her responses so that we could revisit and reflect upon them throughout the weekend.

A thankful tree is something I’ve actually done in my classroom many times before.  We start the project out as a group with a read aloud, a discussion, and everyone contributing a few leaves, and then throughout the week the students are free to add leaves as they are reminded of things they’re grateful for.  It’s always turned out to be a gorgeous project that serves as a wonderful reminder of just how much we all have to be thankful for.  Our smaller at home version was no different.  We’ve revisited it many times and added things as Miss G has requested to and the entire project, start to finish, was a lot of fun.

IMG 4442

It started a week or so ago in our courtyard with a stack of coffee filters, some watered down food colouring (we used approximately 3 tablespoons of water for 10 drops of colouring), some droppers, and an old piece of cardboard as a work surface.

IMG 4444

Using a stack of 2 or 3 at a time, Grae squeezed our homemade watercolours out onto the filters and watched the colours run and mix to create gorgeous colour combinations and patterns.  Here in the October heat, they dried so quickly that I was able to cut them into very simple leaf shapes as she continued painting more filters.

IMG 2516

Throughout the week, we talked about things we were both thankful for and I recorded one idea on each leaf.

IMG 2517

Some of the things she felt happy to have were really eye opening.  While I do appreciate the construction across the street from our building for the entertainment / education if provides Miss G, often times it just seems like a whole lot of extra noise, dust, and traffic.  Well, Gracen doesn’t agree.  She said she’s happy to have it because “it’s really cool and we get to watch all of the cool stuff happen like big trucks and cranes and cement coming”.

IMG 2520

When we were ready to assemble our tree of thanks, I sketched an outline of a leafless tree onto an Ikea flatpack I had tucked away.  Brad cut it out and we hung it in our main room using painter’s tape rolls.

IMG 2521

Then it was time for Gracen to begin adding her leaves.

IMG 2528

She added all of these on her own, save the very top row, and I love how she included a few falling leaves “since it’s fall”.

IMG 2533

My favourite of the bunch has to be “Papa’s nice socks”.  And it’s true – she really does love Brad’s tall athletic socks – so much so, that she can often be sporting them {hiked up around her thighs} around the house.

IMG 2531

I haven’t decided what we’ll do when we take our thankful tree down, but I may just keep the leaves and make them into some sort of thankful book… We shall see!

Dissolving Gobstoppers

10 / 11 / 1310 / 11 / 13

This week, Miss G and I have been participating in a candy play series with several other mamas and munchkins.  The goal has been to experiment with candy and come up with several fun and uinique ways to creat, play, and explore with the Halloween treats that will soon be making their way into our houses. On Monday we created beautiful glossy paint using Skittles, on Tuesday we created mouldable and edible candy clay, on Wednesday we sorted, counted, and graphed SweeTARTS. and yesterday we used our goodies to make fun candy jewellery.

This is by no means an original idea…  In fact, I’ve seen it around the web several times before {like here and here}.  But cool?  YES.  Soooo cool.  Like magic milk paint, I think it’s just one of those things you have to try yourself and see in person.  It’s that cool. Plus, when teaching I’d always fret about the teeth of my munchkins who seemed to get multiple backs of Gobstoppers each year around Halloween.   Well, this is the perfect way to enjoy them without having to worry about your little one’s teeth or sugar consumption.

Candy Jewellery two ways | Mama Papa Bubba

Gracen and I have been having so much fun coming up with interesting ways to play, learn, and create with candy this week.  Since we almost never have it around, she thinks being able to play with candy is really cool, and with Halloween coming up, I’m thrilled to have some tried and true ways to put her candy stash to good use without it going into her belly or the garbage can.  Today’s activity was crazy simple {in a good way}, and we had a ton of fun with it.  Not to mention that it was perfect for my little lady who adores dress-up, jewels, and crafts.

SweeTART Sorting and Graphing

10 / 9 / 1310 / 10 / 13

This week, Miss G and I are participating in a candy play series with several other mamas  and munchkins from around the world…  On Monday we created beautiful glossy paint using Skittles, and yesterday we created candy clay that is fun, mouldable, and edible.

Sorting Graphing With SweeTARTS or other small candies

After yesterday’s homemade candy clay recipe, I decided that today we’d get back to finding creative ways to put Grae’s soon-to-be Halloween candy stash to good use.  One of the treats that always seems to be popular during the month of October is small coloured candies, whether they’re SweeTARTS, M&Ms, Smarties, or something else.  The good thing about these types of goodies is they lend themselves perfectly to all sorts of fun math activities – sorting, counting, comparing, and graphing included.  So that’s what we did – we used a few individual-sized bags of SweeTARTS to develop some basic math skills, all in a way that just seemed like regular fun and games.

Candy Clay

10 / 8 / 1310 / 8 / 13

This week, Miss G and I are participating in a candy play series with several other mamas and munchkins from around the world…  Yesterday’s theme was painting – check out our glossy Skittles paint here.

Mouldable Sculptable Edible Candy Clay | Mama Papa Bubba

It’s no secret that we absolutely love homemade play dough around here…  In fact, we usually have 2 or 3 batches on the go at once, and most often, we pull at least a batch out a day.  It’s hard to choose a favourite, but out of all our go-to recipes, I think the marshmallow dough we made this summer was one of the most enjoyed.  So when I stumbled upon this recipe for homemade candy corn, it got me thinking…  Would the dough be similar?  How much of a ‘play window’ would it allow for before it started hardening?  Would it easily mould?  Well, there’s only one way to find out, now isn’t there?

Al Kout Mall & Lookout Tower

10 / 7 / 1310 / 17 / 14

Al Kout Mall is one of my favourite nearby places to hang out in Kuwait… It has a beautiful water-lined walking path leading up to it, fountains that are choreographed to music, and tons of outdoor seating space.  Plus, if you go in the mornings, it’s very quiet, which I love.  Miss G and I visited this morning, enjoyed cool drinks outside, and then climbed to the top of the lookout tower.  Here’s our morning in photos…

Glossy Skittles Paint

10 / 7 / 1310 / 7 / 13

Halloween is quickly approaching, which as a mama of a sugar-free kid, means it’s time to get extra creative.  Creative with the goodies we make to hand out to trick-or-treaters, creative with the candy alternatives we have for Miss G, and creative with the mass amounts of treats she’ll inevitably come home with after Halloween night here at The Dunes.

So while we’re still not ready to let Miss G chow down on the sugary sweets she brings home from candy collecting with her little friends, we are more than happy to help her put it to use with art projects, learning activities, and science experiments, and that’s just what we did a couple of days ago.  Using a bag of Skittles, a couple of other things we already had on hand and some inspiration from this post, we created a thick, sticky paint that smells delicious and dries with the most beautiful glossy finish.

Jack-O-Lantern Cheese Snacks

Jack O Lantern Cheese Snack | Mama Papa Bubba

I created this silly little jack-o-lantern on a whim this afternoon and paired it a few crackers and a bunch of apple slices as an afternoon snack for Miss G.  Being that it was the first time I’d ever served her a jack-o-lantern made of cheese, I knew she’d really get a kick out of it, but she honestly thought it was the funniest, BEST thing EVER.  Who knew a simple cheese snack could make someone’s day?

A Walk Along the Gulf…

9 / 29 / 1310 / 6 / 13

After giving birth in Canada and returning to Kuwait with a 20 day old baby girl, I was very lucky to find myself in the company of 4 friends / fellow teachers who were also brand new moms {or very soon-to-be}.  All living in the same school-provided apartments was a huge blessing as a freshly minted mama {and a stay-at-home one at that} and the ladies and babes that Miss G and I spent our days with very quickly became like a second family.  Throughout the year, us mamas took turns hosting brunches, housing baby play dates, and organizing fun outings for us all to enjoy.  One of our weekly staples was a walk along the Arabian Gulf with a pitstop at Starbucks before heading back the opposite way again.  Comprised of saltwater air, sunshine, a palm-lined path, and a promise of a midpoint coffee, it was always a favourite outing of mine.

Fast forward three years.

Though {sadly} no longer snuggled up in a wrap and accompanied by a posse of adorable baby friends, today Grae and I did our favourite walk once again for the first time since being back in Kuwait.  It was a little too hot for comfort, but we parked in the shade of a tree at the sea club like we always do, made our way along the gulf, cooled down with some a/c and a cold drink, and even popped by Al-Kout to watch the dancing fountains before heading back.

Grae’s new fascinations now include magenta trash bins, searching for squirrels in the bushes along the water {sorry kid, not gonna happen!}, the roughness of palm trunks, and echo of the call to prayer.  Here’s our morning in photos…

Bright Minds’ Creative Play Area

9 / 28 / 1310 / 4 / 13

One of the things I loved most about living in Vancouver with a toddler was how much there was to do.  During our 2 years there, I never felt like I was grasping for things to do and see – not even during the dreary winters…  On beautiful days we’d visit parks, hang out at the beach, and go for walks, and on rainy days we’d hang out at our favourite indoor spots (community centre play gyms, pools, libraries, and skating rinks, the conservatory, the airport observation area, 6 Pack Beach, Pottery Barn Kids, the Play Palace, UBC, Kokopeli, or Sweet Salt to name a few).  On top of all of that, kids’  programs were plentiful and inexpensive, so we enjoyed many rounds of parent and tot swimming and ballet, and we were members at both the Vancouver Aquarium and Science World.

IMG 1153

Having had it so good for so long, I was a teensy bit worried that our days in Kuwait would be dull in comparison.  The truth is, parks and play areas and kids programs do exist here… it’s just that without talking to the right person, you may never find out about them {and once you do, they can be terribly expensive}. So, I decided to start my research early.  We were actually still living in Vancouver when I first learned about Bright Minds Creative Learning Centre.  It looked and sounded like the perfect place for us online, so I was excited for our first visit.

Sparkly Coloured Pasta for Beading Crafting and Sensory Play | Mama Papa Bubba

During a quick stop to my very favourite grocery store in all of Kuwait, Gracen and I came across ditalini pasta and both immediately saw the potential in its shape.  She carefully selected a specific bag from the shelf and tossed it into our cart with gusto {and a giggle}.

Ever since arriving in Kuwait, Miss G has talked about doing 2 special things when we visit Vancouver next summer…  Going to the Kerrisdale Play Palace and visiting Science World.  Well imagine her surprise when I told her that Kuwait has its own version of both of those things – so excited!  She’s waited for weeks and weeks, and now that we finally have a car, we were able to cross one of the two off of our list this morning.
