I created this silly little jack-o-lantern on a whim this afternoon and paired it a few crackers and a bunch of apple slices as an afternoon snack for Miss G. Being that it was the first time I’d ever served her a jack-o-lantern made of cheese, I knew she’d really get a kick out of it, but she honestly thought it was the funniest, BEST thing EVER. Who knew a simple cheese snack could make someone’s day?
The idea came to me a few weeks back when Miss G had selected a pack of the purple cheddar Babybels while grocery shopping instead of the red ones she usually picks. When she opened the wrapper to reveal orange wax inside, turning the miniature cheese wheel into a pumpkin was the first thing that came to mind {this is what happens when Halloween is looming near and you’re the mama of a sugar-free kid…}
Though the crunchy mama in me cringed about it a bit, I just used a black Sharpie to draw the pumpkin lines and jack-o-lantern faces on the wax coverings {my thought is that the Sharpie couldn’t possibly seep through the wax in the short amount of time it was on the cheese – please tell me it’s true}. I did find that the Sharpie worked better when used in short, quick strokes as opposed to longer slower ones, so that’s something to keep in mind. Afterwards, I added a couple of small pieces of green pipe cleaner as a stem and vine by simply poking them into the wax, and that was that.
With all of the sugary treats coming our way soon, I’m so happy to have found another fun Halloween-themed treat that is healthy and really easy to make. I don’t know that we’ll be handing these out to the trick-or-treaters that knock on our door on Halloween night {I certainly don’t want to be known as the lady who hands out cheese – that’s almost as bad as the guy who hands out toothbrushes!}, but I do think they’d make for a perfect Halloween party or classroom snack.
