A Cloudy Day at the Beach

3 / 20 / 154 / 5 / 15

The weather forecast called for rain and a dust storm, but we did let that come in the way of the beach day we’d planned with friends.  Instead, we packed up family-sized bento of snacks and our bag of beach toys, convoyed out to Khiran, and hoped for the best.  The afternoon worked out perfectly – the weather was warm but not too hot, the kids played happily, and the rain held out just until we were packing up to leave around 5 o’clock.  It was a lovely day that ended with a filthy munchkin and a long bath, but all good days should end that way, shouldn’t they?

Sand Play Dough With Loose Parts

In preparation for this week’s Hawaiian-themedCrafty Kids class, Miss G and I experimented with a new-to-us dough this morning… Sand play dough!  While I have seen several different types of sand doughs and clays floating around the internet, I figured we may as well try just adding some sand to our very favourite no-cook play dough first.  Sure enough, it worked.  Wonderfully, I might add!

Beach Morning

2 / 18 / 143 / 14 / 14

Another gorgeous morning and a few new sand toys meant another day spent at Anjafa Beach today.  We scoured the beach for treasures, opened a treasure shop, built sand castles, talked to stray kitties, and took about a gazillion photos…  It was a good morning and I’m so, so grateful for the lovely weather we’ve been having here in Kuwait.  Before long, we’ll be be melting from the heat, so we’re soaking it in while we can.

Anjafa Beach

1 / 30 / 143 / 2 / 14

Today we ventured down to Anjafa Beach to check out the fun-looking playground we’d passed by a few days back, but were disappointed to find that while it looked cool from the road, it was basically a hot mess up close.  Other than being filthy {something we’ve grown very used to when it comes to playgrounds in Kuwait}, many pieces of equipment were broken {and sharp} and the play area was surrounded by construction holes, wires sticking out of the ground, and stacks of bricks.  Not quite what we were hoping for….

Luckily though, the beach area in the same park was quite lovely.  Besides a few fishermen way down the way, we pretty much had the entire thing to ourselves and spent the morning finding treasures, dipping our toes in the cool waves, and making footprints and drawings in the untouched sand. It was a really lovely morning.  Now if only the weather would stay just like this year round…

Iona Beach

4 / 23 / 134 / 27 / 13

IMG 8536Today Miss G and I trudged off the beaten path a little to check out somewhere that’s been on my mental list for a very long while now… Iona Beach.   Nestled in a quiet area out beside the Vancouver Airport, Iona Beach is definitely unique.  After you pass the farms lining the airport runway, you come to Iona Beach Regional Park, a piece of rural heaven just outside of the city.

IMG 8494Now I must admit that there were some very serious tears when we got out of the car and Miss G realized that this beach was not the awesome playground-having beach she’s used to visiting.  Our saving grace, however, was this lookout tower that was cool enough to {at least semi} make up for the disappointment.

IMG 8499While there were tons of swampy beach areas to explore, we opted  to head out for a walk on the park’s jetty.

Plane Watching at Iona BeachWe were definitely the odd ones out in a community of bird watchers and dog walkers (every single person we passed had a dog or binoculars and/or a camera with a giant zoom), but what we really loved was the plane watching!  They were amazingly close and basically came one after the next.

IMG 8524IMG 8521The other fascination during our jetty walk was with potato bugs.  I’m not sure if Grae has seen these much in the past, but they were plentiful and she certainly loved them.

IMG 8515What I didn’t realize when I suggested we check out the jetty was that it was 4.5 kms long!  We made it a couple of kilometres out before Miss G called it quits and asked to turn around.  On the way back, there were definitely a few bouts of carrying, several sitting breaks, and even an attempt to crawl ‘because it’s easier for tired legs’.  (Note to self: bring the stroller next time!)

Next time the mood strikes to plane watch or take a long walk out into the ocean, we’ll definitely go back. If you’re in the area and want to visit, simply head to the airport, and before arriving to the terminal, take a right onto Templeton… You’ll run right into it!

A Beach Morning

4 / 15 / 134 / 18 / 13

This morning, on the final day of Grandma Charlotte’s visit, we headed down to Stanley Park to soak in the sunshine and crisp ocean air…  The photos say it themselves, but it was lovely.

IMG 8038IMG 8039IMG 8041IMG 8050File all of these lovely things – cool sunshiny mornings, layers and boots, days with grandmas – under things we’ll miss once back in Kuwait.

Dirt, Sticks, & Water

3 / 8 / 133 / 11 / 13

IMG 6428IMG 6424IMG 6417IMG 6427We woke up to an absolutely gorgeous sunny day today and immediately packed up a lunch and headed down to our favourite beach-front playground.  As always, Grae spent tons of time climbing ladders, sliding through tunnels, riding the swings, and spinning on the merry-go-round, but during this visit, she spent just as much time climbing on and off this log, adding bits and pieces, and tending to her delicious-looking mud soup.

It makes my heart happy that dirt, sticks, and water can still inspire just as much play as it did when I was little.
