With spring now in full force, it was time for a new addition to our ongoing play dough kit collection. Though my first thought was to put together a spring garden set, we’ve made several very similar kits in the past and our garden set got a ton of play last spring, so I figured we’d switch it up this time around.
Because we’ll be raising butterflies again this year {shhh… Miss G doesn’t know just yet!}, I’ve had all things butterfly on my mind recently, so a butterfly world play dough kit was the next thing to come to mind.

I kept things pretty simple with this one… Two batches of our favourite ever no-cook play dough {one in blue for the sky and one in white for the clouds}, some cherry blossom branches leftover from Miss G’s Japanese-themed birthday party, some sushi grass {long | short), plus some butterfly figures we picked up at the science centre in Kuwait {Safari Ltd. has a great butterfly toob}, and a few caterpillar figures I randomly found at the dollar store one day.
After pulling the kit together while Miss G was having her daily dose of quiet play time, I grabbed a mini wooden rolling pin and a big square placemat, and set everything out on the kitchen table for her to discover afterwards.
I know that it’s probably hard to believe, but after all of these years of different doughs and kits, she still gets excited about a new play dough kit. {And thank goodness for that – I’m not sure what I’d do if my role as mama no longer included dreaming up new play dough kit ideas. ☺}
And as usual, she dove right in and began creating.
Some of her masterpieces had elaborate make believe stories to go along with them…
And others, like this one showing the different stages of the butterfly’s life cycle, were a little bit more scientific.
This set kept us busy for the bulk of our afternoon, and when she was done playing, she simply sorted everything back into our Ikea GLIS container {CAN | US}, and popped it in the playroom to be kept until the urge to create butterfly worlds strikes again!
