It’s no secret that Miss G and I adore books. We’ve got shelves and shelves of them and I have absolutely no guilt about adding a few favourites here and there. I add them to Easter baskets, they’re part of our Christmas Eve tradition, and they’re a staple birthday gift in our house… You just can’t have too many, in my opinion.
Each year about a week or so before Valentine’s Day, I set out a Valentine’s card creation station for Miss G. It changes a little bit year to year and the supplies have matured with her somewhat over the years {the valentine’s creative table she enjoyed at 2.5 can be seen here}, but overall the idea stays the same. It’s simply a collection of inviting supplies set out for her to use as she wishes – no expectations, no prescribed outcome.
Today our sweet little Sam is 3 months old {and 5 days corrected}! He’s currently 7 pounds 6 ounces and wearing newborn sized clothes and diapers. He loves nothing more than being held and snuggled and is a big fan of having his bum patted and his head gently stroked. He currently sleeps most of the day, likes being on his tummy, and can roll from his back to his front when on a mattress or other soft surface. He doesn’t love sleeping all alone and has the saddest little cries and shrieks when his tummy is giving him troubles {which sadly is very often at this point}. He does really well in the car, is super chilled out and content in a warm bath, and has been such a champ with his transition from the NICU to home. It goes without saying that we love him endlessly.
After our rhyming pairs matching game, Miss G asked to play another homemade game this afternoon. With dinnertime nearing and a baby boy who needed one of his mama’s arms, it needed to be something super quick and easy to pull together, and that’s how this very simple coin sorting tray came about. Admittedly, it’s more of an activity than a game, but Miss G didn’t mind in the least. It meant that she got to play with money, which she’s been super interested in lately. That being said, since she’s spent the majority of her life living in the Middle East, Canadian currency is not something she knows much about just yet, so this was perfect for her.
One thing I’ve been trying my best to do since Sam’s come home is making a little time each day for Grae and I to do something fun together. Just the two of us, with her having my full attention. It’s not always easy as baby brother tends to be the type of baby who doesn’t love being put down, but so far we’ve been making it work. By request of Miss G, we’ve done mini manicures, we’ve cooked up some yummy treats, we’ve taken our babies for a walk outside {okay, so that one involved Mr. Sam, but by her choice}, and we’ve done some art.
I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to have them both with me under one roof, if only for half an hour. Gosh, I love them so.
Another day, another first for our little NICU babe. Tonight, at 38 days old, Bubba had his very first bath. He wasn’t sure about it at first, but as soon as he adjusted to being in the warm water, it was like this sense peace came over him, leaving him perfectly calm and content while ultra alert at the same time. We snuggled skin-to-skin afterwards as we do each night, and then it was time to tuck him in and say goodbye. Leaving at the end of the day is always the hardest part… Here’s hoping that it won’t be for much longer.
